PFT: Malcolm Kelly injured during "Hell Week"

It was billed as a positive when the Redskins' wide receivers all agreed to show for new quarterback Donovan McNabb's pre-training camp "Hell Week" in Arizona. The Redskins, though, emerged from the "intense series of workouts in the desert heat"...

Gotta disagree with the article here. Kelly has been all disappointment. Thomas has shown flashes, like nearly beating the Saints by himself last year. They were drafted together, but that's where the lumping should stop with these two.

I saw this somewhere else too, Mike. And I'm not sure PFT was the source. But I agree, PFT pretty much sucks and has a hard on for anything that could be detrimental to the Skins. (See: their Haynesworth coverage.)

Still, Thomas and Kelly are on completely different planes at this point in their young careers. Thomas is due to break out large, and Kelly, so far, has been the injury-plagued unproductive guy a lot of us feared he might be.

(I ain't down on the kid or anything; and I hope he proves me wrong. But that's my take right now.)

They are very much still in the same boat, gents. Last year, they were nearly the same guy.

Kelly - 25 for 347
Thomas - 25 for 325

Both had a single great game. Thomas against the Saints (7 for 100 - 2 TDs) and Kelly against San Diego (5 for 109).

And if you want to harp on Kelly for injuries let me remind you that Thomas was out the last two games last year with an injury.

The only real difference from last year is Thomas' 3 TD receptions and Kelly can't help it if Zorn refused to call the fade.

Sorry but both these guys are suspect at this point. Still.

eh....let's see what a real coaching staff can do first before rushing to judgment

Neo, I hate to disagree with you, but Kelly is not on the same plane as Thomas since Kelly offers nothing to the special teams and Thomas has/will.

I thought I recently saw a story that said Kelly was likely to be cut within the next few weeks anyway?

It was on PFT - the very same PFT who said in this article:
"Though he's been a major disappointment along with fellow 2008 first-day pick Devin Thomas, Kelly's roster spot is not believed to be in jeopardy."

Such great reporting!

Hey Brian, we were just talking as a receiver here, I thought, and in that vein they are so close to identical over the course of the last two years as to be the same guy.

Sure, Thomas offers something to ST but that is a distant second in my book when we so obviously need a guy to be a real #2 (and maybe #1, if you believe in those sorts of things).

Hey man, we were just talking as a receiver here, I thought, and in that vein they are so close to identical over the course of the last two years as to be the same guy.

OK, in that respect, I don't think either of them have established themselves as a real #2.

Lanky, I think that is where I read it. Journalism at it's best!

The way I see it is that if he hadn't injured it during hell week he would have injured it during the first week of training camp. So maybe hell week gives him a headstart on healing.

I'm with you guys that can't wait to see what this offense looks like with Shanny/McNabb. If will answer for once and for all how much of the problems were Zorn and Campbell and how much was due to the play-off caliber roster Vinny assembled for them.

with all due respect Neo, Kelly is not the same quality receiver as Thomas right now.

Sorry brother but I disagree and will continue to do so until such time as Thomas definitively proves me wrong.

The game where he got 109 was against a 3rd string SD defense that had pulled their starters in the first qtr like it was a preseason game.

and Thomas' breakout game was against a stellar NO defense that was fighting their hearts out not to lose their first game.

Again, I disagree. The NO defense was nothing special last year except in the Take Away catagory. There, they excelled and were very special and it baled them out a lot but otherwise they were ranked #25 in the league in total defense.

Add to it that Kelly did it on the road in the last game, under the dark cloud of the impending Zorn exit and the two efforts look pretty similar to me.

I think Thomas was going to go on to something special but they were able to just key in on him because....well we had nobody else.

Understand, I am not saying Kelly is going to be a rock star or that Thomas is going to be a bust. I am saying that right here, right now, their collective bodies of work on the field as Wide Receivers for the Redskins make the equal. Period.

There is 9 games difference between them (Thomas has played 30 and Kelly 21) and yet in those 9 games Thomas has only collected 12 more catches than Kelly. Kelly has the higher yd/game (17.4 to 14.8) and yd/catch (13.0 to 11.1). Thomas has 4 TDs to Kelly's zero.

At this point, after 2 years, it's a wash. I want to see what happens with a QB who has better timing, a real game plan and coaches who aren't in over their heads. Maybe then I will know something.

u know i read where Joey Galloway started with the first team today and Kelly and Thomas caught passes from Rex Grossman..maybe neither of them strike Shannon as a starter at this oint.
