Less than two hours until the start of free agency, rumors are flying that the Washington Redskins will soon be signing defensive end Julius Peppers.

The thinking had been that, if the Redskins decide they want Peppers, they'll get Peppers. It just wasn't clear whether the Redskins want Peppers.

Our pal Lance Zierlein of KGOW in Houston has reported, via Twitter, that the Redskins will come "charging hard" after Peppers and that he expects a deal to be done by tomorrow. Last year, Zierlein reported that the Redskins would land defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth days before it happened

The flaw behind this PFT post is that it was John Keim of the Examiner who broke the Haynesworth story long before FA broke.......

Until he's a Skin, I believe it when I see it.

i dont know how much weight that PFT carries and I also think it has to do a lot with the fact that we have done this so much in the past that we are always going to be in the news right before FA hits.

I tend to believe this guy - if you look at his twitter feed, he broke the Jets and Chargers trade tonight before it happened.

PS - Revis on one side, Cromartie on the other...holy SMOKES that defense is gonna be hard to move against.

This is also the same guy who broke the AH to the Redskins last year. It looks legit.

Also...

Dansby to the Dolphins is all but a done deal.

I really hope all the Peppers talk is just that...talk.

Hold the line on Dansby. Maese is saying nothing is locked with him. Time will tell.

Oh and...

Welcome to the 2010 football season. :)

I really hope all the Peppers talk is just that...talk.

Bears are very confident that they will sign Peppers. Of course that means the Redskins may end up with the younger, almost as talented Aaron Kampman. Not a bad consolation prize.

Still not sure Peppers makes a lot of sense and do you really want to throw another $100M at a guy over 30 who may be playing a new position? We just drafted Rak and Jarmon. Seems to me like we need to give the drafted guys a shot instead of throwing giant FA contracts around again.

I guess we couldn't really blame Danny, seeing as he's just signing the checks now. ;)

Peppers has agreed to visit the Bears on Friday - via twitter from Maese.

It sounds like one crazy bidding war going on with the Redskins and Bears for Peppers

Just heard that Carey is saying just that - it is an all out war of bidding right now.

Edited to correct agent.

cromartie aint ****...

I believe he will be taken advantage of this year. People will see how poor he is. He will be picked on constantly because of Revis. He has been living off the reputation of his rookie season.

From Maese...

Redskins top two defensive targets are Peppers and Dansby. Looks like Peppers to bears is all but a done deal. Dansby to the dolphins looks likely as well.

In fact, Lovie just landed in Charlotte. That is a done deal.

On to Dansby.

Not quite yet...Bears have the big advantage of striking first, but don't underestimate the power of Danny's wallet. Let's hope the Bears get 'er done though.

We've spoken with Lance Zierlein of KGOW and the Houston Chronicle regarding the change, given that Zierlein was convinced Peppers was heading to D.C. -- and given that Zierlein had it nailed last year regarding the signing of Albert Haynesworth by the Redskins. Zierlein says that, even though everything was pointing to the Redskins and Peppers on Thursday night, "something happened" to put the Bears in the driver's seat. It could be that Peppers simply wants to play for Rod Marinelli, and that he wants to avoid a 3-4 defense.

Translation

"The Redskins were never in it and Peppers agent used the Redskins to drive up the price"

Allen wasn't even on the phone with Peppers agent, and Lovie was in Charlotte to pick him up 30 minutes into FA

@SI_PeterKing Just heard 'Skins GM Bruce Allen is riding herd on building to skip on biggest FA names, clean up own house, and win secondary FA battles.
