Top NFL teams search here, there and everywhere for talent. Surprisingly often, they find it in players who never got to strut their stuff collegiately on national television.
Recent success stories have made front offices increasingly aware of how important small schools can be in shaping their rosters. Think of what has occurred at the wide receiver position alone.
Marques Colston (seventh round, Hofstra, 2006) emerged as the leading target for Drew Brees and the eventual Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. Pierre Garcon (sixth round, Mount Union, 2008) developed into a key target for Peyton Manning and the AFC champion Indianapolis Colts.
USA TODAY looks at small school players who will be available in the April 22-24 draft and have a shot at playing big in the NFL:

Why he can't: Needs to show more explosion off the line of scrimmage. Desire to impose his will on defenders has been questioned. After succeeding against smaller opponents, will find it's a very different game when he no longer has a massive size advantage.

How can we do this lengthy series of Daily NFL Draft Prospect Profiles and not once feature a player from Notre Dame? Can't do it, so today we fix that.
Of course, the Giants have no interest in quarterback Jimmy Clausen. And I doubt seriously we will see Golden Tate in a Giants uniform.
So, that leaves us with Sam Young, the mammoth (6-foot-8, 320-pound) right tackle. Young is a guy who started for four years at Notre Dame, but like most things connected to Fighting Irish football these days never quite lived up to what people thought he would become.
He is, however, a Notre Dame lineman and talented ND linemen always seem to find their way into the NFL. So, let's take a closer look.

Great height and bulk with a huge frame ... Long arms ... Good natural strength ... Is capable of getting a big push in the run game ... Not a great athlete ... Isn't very quick or agile ... Has heavy feet ... Really struggles with speed ... Can only play one position.
Will likely be relegated to right tackle at the next level --- Never quite lived up to all the hype but is a battle-tested veteran with rare size and solid intangibles --- Didn't develop into the top prospect some envisioned early in his career but has the ability to be a serviceable pro and perhaps more in the right situation.

Plays with a mean streak in the run game. He showcases good overall athleticism for a guy his size when asked to slide-block and get out in space. He exhibits the pop to create some movement off the ball. Young works hard to finish blocks but struggles to consistently keep his base down through the play ... Young gets a bit heavy-footed when asked to slide on contact and struggles to mirror his man. He allows defenders to easily sidestep and disengage from his block when they want to get physical and is only average when asked to reach the edge.

Selvish Capers started his collegiate career at West Virginia as a tight end. He played there as a redshirt freshman in 2006 in a limited capacity. During the off-season (heading into the 2007 campaign), Capers was moved to the offensive line. Capers started that season as a back up, but by the middle of the season he secured the starting position at right tackle and has been there ever since. Capers has helped pave the way for some great rushing offenses. In 2006, the Mountaineers ranked third in the nation in rushing offense. In 2008 the team ranked 15th in the nation. Capers deserves a lot of credit for those impressive numbers.
Capers has a little room to put on more weight and at this point he is better suited as a right tackle rather than a left tackle; that will move him down most draft boards. Capers is certainly a capable player who has great footwork, yet his best asset is his ability to stay healthy. Capers has been a starter since the 2007 season and has not missed a game since.
Capers is not one of the top linemen in this class, but he could develop into a quality NFL player sooner or later, and that should make him worth a mid or late round selection.
1/24 Update: Capers finished the 2009 season relatively strong and that has led to some NFL scouts taking notice. Capers is still not one of the best offensive tackles around, but he has been invited to the NFL Combine and he can certainly work his way up into the second round with a good showing in Indianapolis. Mostly he needs to show the NFL that he can be a consistent pass blocker since he played college ball on a team that loved to run the ball.
4/10 Update: Unfortunately for Capers, he has not proven to be a consistent pass blocker. There is no doubt he has quick feet and a surprising amount of athleticism for a player his size, but offensive tackles have to block. A zone blocking scheme will cover up some of his short comings, but he is probably a couple years away from seriously contributing to an NFL team. However, he does have a high ceiling and somebody should be willing to take a chance on him around the fourth round.

03/28/10 - TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT OFFENSIVE GUARDS: Mitch Petrus, Arkansas, 6-3, 310, 3-4: Keeping track of Petrus on and off the field was a significant chore. He was originally a walk-on tight end, then switched to offensive guard, then fullback and back to guard in 2007. Oh, and his first name is really Jonathan, but he goes by the short version of Mitchell, his middle name. When he finally settled in at guard, Petrus earned second-team all-SEC honors. But just when it seemed he'd found his way, Petrus missed the 2008 season because of an academic suspension. He returned for an outstanding season in 2009. 03/19/10 - PRO DAY RESULTS: Arkansas OL Mitch Petrus (6-foot-3 1/4, 307 pounds) made a name for himself by tying the record for bench press repetitions at 225 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine. He continued his quest to become drafted at Arkansas’ pro day on March 17, but he chose to stand on his combine bench press record. He did post decent numbers in the other drills, however, running the 40-yard dash in 5.25 and 5.28 seconds, recording a 30-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot, 10-inch broad jump and a 7.79-second three-cone drill. Selvish Capers started his collegiate career at West Virginia as a tight end. He played there as a redshirt freshman in 2006 in a limited capacity. During the off-season (heading into the 2007 campaign), Capers was moved to the offensive line. Capers started that season as a back up, but by the middle of the season he secured the starting position at right tackle and has been there ever since. Capers has helped pave the way for some great rushing offenses. In 2006, the Mountaineers ranked third in the nation in rushing offense. In 2008 the team ranked 15th in the nation. Capers deserves a lot of credit for those impressive numbers.
Capers has a little room to put on more weight and at this point he is better suited as a right tackle rather than a left tackle; that will move him down most draft boards. Capers is certainly a capable player who has great footwork, yet his best asset is his ability to stay healthy. Capers has been a starter since the 2007 season and has not missed a game since.
Capers is not one of the top linemen in this class, but he could develop into a quality NFL player sooner or later, and that should make him worth a mid or late round selection.
1/24 Update: Capers finished the 2009 season relatively strong and that has led to some NFL scouts taking notice. Capers is still not one of the best offensive tackles around, but he has been invited to the NFL Combine and he can certainly work his way up into the second round with a good showing in Indianapolis. Mostly he needs to show the NFL that he can be a consistent pass blocker since he played college ball on a team that loved to run the ball.
4/10 Update: Unfortunately for Capers, he has not proven to be a consistent pass blocker. There is no doubt he has quick feet and a surprising amount of athleticism for a player his size, but offensive tackles have to block. A zone blocking scheme will cover up some of his short comings, but he is probably a couple years away from seriously contributing to an NFL team. However, he does have a high ceiling and somebody should be willing to take a chance on him around the fourth round.

2009 Senior Bowl Invite…2009 East-West Shrine Invite…2008: Ruled academically ineligible for 2008, but practiced with the team while redshirting. 2007: He moved from fullback to guard prior to the season and played in all 13 games with 12 starts (did not start against Chattanooga). Earned second-team All-SEC honors from the league’s coaches. He cleared the way for two All-American running backs – Doak Walker Award winner and Heisman Trophy runner-up Darren McFadden, who led the SEC and ranked fourth in the nation in rushing (140.8), and Felix Jones, who ranked fifth in the SEC and No. 43 in the country (89.4). His overall grade for the year was 83.4, including a grade of 96.3 on passing plays. His 54 knockdown blocks were third only to Nate Garner’s 62 and Jonathan Luigs’ 55. 03/28/10 - TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT OFFENSIVE GUARDS: Mitch Petrus, Arkansas, 6-3, 310, 3-4: Keeping track of Petrus on and off the field was a significant chore. He was originally a walk-on tight end, then switched to offensive guard, then fullback and back to guard in 2007. Oh, and his first name is really Jonathan, but he goes by the short version of Mitchell, his middle name. When he finally settled in at guard, Petrus earned second-team all-SEC honors. But just when it seemed he'd found his way, Petrus missed the 2008 season because of an academic suspension. He returned for an outstanding season in 2009. 03/19/10 - PRO DAY RESULTS: Arkansas OL Mitch Petrus (6-foot-3 1/4, 307 pounds) made a name for himself by tying the record for bench press repetitions at 225 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine. He continued his quest to become drafted at Arkansas’ pro day on March 17, but he chose to stand on his combine bench press record. He did post decent numbers in the other drills, however, running the 40-yard dash in 5.25 and 5.28 seconds, recording a 30-inch vertical jump, an 8-foot, 10-inch broad jump and a 7.79-second three-cone drill. He also did a position workout at the center position (he played guard, tight end and fullback in college) for three NFL offensive line coaches, including Cincinnati’s Paul Alexander and Detroit assistant offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn. – Gil Brandt, NFL.com
