Orakpo still has trouble in space. Fletcher needs to be replaced. I could see a line of Caricker, Bowen, Cofield and Orakpo, being a pretty good D line. Kerrigan could be a force still at linebacker. Jenkins would make a fine tackle if he can progress.

Perry or Alexander move inside, Robinson slides outside.

Defensive backfield still has the same problems, but that's not really a 3-4 vs. 4-3 issue.

I think this defense is failing for two reasons... Haslett can't outcoach anybody and can never neutralize any team's strengths. Injuries and weakness in personel. I think a 4-3 even after after 3 years fits our roster better.

The trouble with the Redskins is that while they make good decisions like the ones to draft Morris in Round 6 and gamble on Griffin with the basket of picks, the team makes a number of key blunders. So, it is one step forward and then one step back.

Where did the team err? Drafting LeRibeus in Round 3 instead of a corner, more productive college OL or safety. Signing Josh Morgan after Garcon despite the fact he missed almost the entire 2011 season and SF wasn't that keen on having him back. Signing Brandon Meriweather and giving him almost $3M in guaranteed money despite the fact he had documented on and off the field issues in other cities. Signing and depending upon Cedric Griffin to hold up against NFL receivers despite two ACLs and being 30 years old. Fans in Minnesota thought he was 'toast' last year with the Vikings.

People on posts were actually surprised we signing him to play corner. The thought was perhaps he would be transitioned to safety because he is a good tackler.

So, in the end you have a team where the good decisions are counterbalanced by some poor ones and the teams sits at 4-5 or 3-6 each season after 9 games and in last place in the NFC East.

Glad to see the Forbath signing has been as good as it has been.

For a team to become a contender in the NFL consistently they need to make a NUMBER of these types of signings over the years.

They also need to get lucky the way the Giants did with Victor Cruz in Round 6 or the Saints did with Marques Colston in Round 7.

Or we did with Alfred Morris in round 6. But I see your point.

As far as the thread title goes, I imagine somewhere Ryman has pulled up a comfortable chair and some napkins to read it slowly with the volume up

It is so sad that our Defense is what used to carry the team, now they are the laughing stock of the league. If we did not have RG3 we could easily be winless right now.

I think at the end of this season we will be starting from scratch anyways, so why not go back to the 4-3

It's not the scheme. It's the inability of the coaching staff to teach it. What makes anybody think this staff could coach a 4-3 any better?

Like Kdawg has said, hire a coach who sells his ideas and passion, and then let him run what the hell he chooses to.

You misunderstand. I want to get rid of the scheme and the coach who has been calling it. Haslett is a hasbeen.

Teams switch defensive schemes. They don't just look up one day and decide they can't run the 4-3 because all of the sudden they have a team full of 3-4 suited players. They decide the 3-4 is better, make the change and get coaches and players w]ho are suited. I don't have an opinion one way or the other as to which is better. But if they are convinced it's the 3-4, they need to make it happen. Haslett is not the answer. He needs to go sooner than later. His schemes and adjustments suck eggs.

There will be none of that around here, he's a never was. I posted stats, remember? :D

In all reality, he's been one of the few, consistent receivers on this team. He hasn't been a world beater, but as crazy as it sounds, he leads the team in receptions....

but yes, I agree that there were some questionable signings, and i think it might have been drivin by Shanny trying to take a page out of Belichicks book. A lot of it is because we were handcuffed by this cap penalty but that's no excuse for moves like Tanard Jackson, which is my mind was the worst move of his tenure thus far.

rak and ryan were both with there hand in tha dirts in college and they were beast in tha 4-3 sceme...yes go back to tha 4-3 PLEASE !!!!!!!

Umm Steven, thats EXACTLY what Shanny did, he took a team that had a catastrophic lack of 3-4 talent, a complete dearth of depth at the position that requires depth in a 3-4 (defencive tackle and linebacker) and a surplus at DE (a position that isnt as needed in a 3-4) and made the switch based on his position that, THATS WHAT HE WANTED AFTER WATCHING FILM OF ANOTHER TEAM. Note, not after watching the skins, but after watching the steelers. then he hired a goon coach with no skills to do what he was told.

You dont scheme a defence based on players that you WANT to have, you scheme around what you have. And yes I was right, and yes im still pissed.

Yep. As bad as our WRs have been, how much worse would e situation be without Morgan? It would have been even more disastrous today, that's for sure. With everyone else injured or ineffective, Griff is quietly developing a nice rapport with Morgan. We'd be screwed without him.

The only part I agree with the OP on is that a change is needed. Not necessarily in scheme, though it could be... But in coaching.

Haslett at this point, even if the injuries are a huge factor, needs to be used as a scapegoat. Firing Shanahan is easier said than done. He'd need to really screw up to be fired, although he may have started the downhill slide thanks to his post game comments yesterday. But the 'Skins have a reputation of canning guys quickly. But change is obviously needed, so who needs to be the guy? How about the guy who has consistently been outperformed by his counterparts week in and week out? The guy who's track record speaks for itself? It's got to be Haslett.

Furthermore, you don't EVER just say, "hey, we need to go back to the 4-3!"

Changing it when we did and how we did was an error. We should have, if intent on changing, converted slowly with a hybrid system using both fronts until we gathered the proper personnel.

The answer in what to change is simple: The coordinator. You pick the guy who has vision, passion and a PLAN. Then, you let him execute it. Will you be able to go and get everyone he wants? No. It's simply not possible. But you give him free reign to do as he sees fit. Let him run the defense. I don't care what defense it is as long as he schemes intelligently due to personnel. It could be a 4-3, 3-4, 5-2, 46, 2-4, 4-2, 4-4. Quite frankly it doesn't make a lick of difference to me. I always laugh when people say, "Let's go to the 4-3!". You go to the system that works best for you. I'm not sure the 4-3 is the answer. I'm not sure the 3-4 is the answer. Right now, I think we're best suited to run a hybrid system. We don't have the pieces to run either one on a full time basis. Once we go shopping and see what's available we'll know what direction we need to go in. And any coordinator we bring in should be able to adapt to what we have if we don't get what we want. It goes back to the whole "plan" thing I was talking about.

For the record, that doesn't mean we don't let the coordinator transition to the defense he wants. He HAS to be given that freedom. But he needs to do it gradually if we can't get the pieces we need right away. And again, I don't mean all the pieces, just the ones that are necessary to reasonably run a specific defense.

Hire the guy that wants to succeed and is hungry.

For the last 3 years this team has struggled in the 3-4. Haslett has his precious system and he is gonna live and die with it without adapting it with the players he has.

how about the GM and HC bring in better talent to run whatever system they choose to run? :)

what I never liked about the Redskins 3-4 is that is never emulated the classic look, big run stuffing NT that took on the double team. Outside linebackers that are dynamic rushers first and foremost while the inside linebackers are key in coverage.

on the backline, safeties that can pop people in space and be opportunistic on turnovers.

we don't have any of those component pieces.

perhaps close at OLB with better coaching but still an area that needs improvement.
