Keim: Redskins to sign QB Bartel

Redskins to sign QB Bartel

After watching Jason Campbell take a beating behind a patchwork offensive line for several weeks, the Redskins have decided to add a third quarterback to their 53-man roster. They will sign former Cowboys quarterback Richard Bartel off the Jaguars' practice squad and release Andre' Woodson from their practice squad, according to two league sources.

Bartel signed with the Cowboys in May 2007 and spent the next season on the club's practice squad. He went to camp again with the Cowboys in '08 and was briefly added to their practice squad before being released for good. Bartel caught on with the Browns late in the '08 season.

So what do we know about Bartel?

Are they keeping the spot warm for Brennan or is Bartel actually a threat to start sometime in the future?

So basically, the Skins figure Jason Campbell has no chance of getting through this season with our current O-line......

Gee, what a surprise.

Great job shoring up that O-line Vinny!!!!!
Man, Mike Williams will be back soon, Problem Solved!!!!!!

Superbowl bound for sure.

(sorry, this is more sarcasm/rant than intelligent conversation that is the staple of BGO, but everytime I think about how Cerrato has pissed away chances to draft talented O-linemen in the 2008 and 2009 drafts it makes me very angry. Joe Gibbs isn't off the hook either, but Vinny has been the guy in charge for the past two years and that's who's getting most of my ire.)

Yeah, he's so good he couldn't make the Browns or the Jaguars 53-man roster. Because you know, those teams are absolutely stacked at the QB position. :)

Remember...Vinny said this is a Super Bowl caliber roster. He must have reached the Super Bowl in Madden playing against himself.

I think the decision at the start of the season to keep just 2 QBs is startling in light of what's happened. I never want to hear our coaches or front office say again that fans don't know what they're talking about. The team was clearly taken totally off guard by how quickly our O Line situation fell apart. That they were not only confident in it to begin with, but so confident they decided to carry just 2 QBs - it's pretty illuminating.

As for QBs on the roster - we cut a scrub and sign a scrub. Keep moving folks, there's nothing to see here. Personally, I'd have kept the scrub that's at least had a month or so of learning the playbook. But hey, that's me :)

I think the team will give Brennan one more year to show whether or not he can play at this level, otherwise, I don't think any of the QBs currently on the roster have a future here. And any progress (assuming he's capable of progress) Brennan might have made is going to be seriously hampered by the liklihood he'll be learning a brand new system under a brand new coaching staff. I'm not a Brennan hater - I think he's got some of the intangibles that are difficult to quantify - and could be an exciting NFL QB if we committed to him. His future is likely tied more to whoever the new coaches are and what system they decide to employ than any other current Redskins player.

I think Zorn will get at the very least a QB coaching job somewhere, possibly an OC job (maybe wherever Holmgren ends up?) and will take Brennan with him.

Brennan was never anything other than fodder.

Bartel is fodder. Woodson is fodder.

Funny for an organization that runs a WCO they end up with a set of qbs for 2009 that included Campbell, Woodson and Bartel

Only Todd Collins among the group seems to have the requisite skills to start in a West Coast offense.

Or am I missing something with the Redskins................as usual?

I'm not sure, given the limited opportunity to assess Brennan that its fair to close the books on him. There's no evidence he has what it takes to be a solid NFL QB, but there's also little evidence to write him off so easily either.

I'd agree on Collins. And if he weren't 56 years old it would matter.

Zorn will never be a OC in this league again.....his playcalling is predictable and while many are very irritated on how the Redskins removed him and the current FUBAR system of Lewis/Lewis/Zorn/coin flip/madden simulator, very few are saying that he shouldn't have been removed.

He's an excellent QB coach and maybe given the opportunity could have been a good OC, but it won't happen in the NFL ranks again. I expect him going back with Holmgren as an assistant HC title but mostly as a QB coach and somebody who helps with the passing schemes.

Eh...Jaworski broke down all his playcalling, and said it was fine. Most of the problem was execution, not the actual plays being called. I think someone will take a chance on him as OC again...maybe not right away, but it could happen.

Ya know, when I saw the thread title, I figured it was a joke thread.
I doubt I'm the only one who's clueless, so I'll go ahead and ask: what's the hidden joke about the name Bartel? I don't get it at all. Someone please clarify! :help:

I knew the name sounded familiar, I actually happen to really like the Replacements, good movie.

Here's my book on Brennan. He has guts. He has moxie. He has heart. What he does not have is an arm capable of making all the throws at this level. Not with the way CB's close on the ball on deep outs/ins, etc. etc.

Colt is not the answer any more than JC apparently is...nevermind TC and this latest cup of coffee.

Guess my point would be that 'arm' is extremely overrated. Brennan isn't Jay Cutler, but he's not Danny Wuerffel either. I don't think the book on Brennan is closed yet. He's made a career out of people telling him he couldn't do it.
