Team Obama Botches Libya Evacuation, Charters Wrong Boat

The U.S. government came under fire today for chartering a rescue boat for Americans stuck in Libya that is too small to cope with the rough Mediterranean sea.

Hundreds of American citizens were finally set to depart Tripoli harbour aboard the Maria Dolores, a small passenger ferry chartered by the U.S., trapped there by rouigh seas.

At the same time larger Greek and Turkish vessels have transported thousands of their own citizens to safety, crossing the choppy water to mainland Europe.

We do not have a Navy present in the Mediterranean! How ****in' crazy is that? With Iran sending vessels into the Mediterranean, we have none! Israel must really feel like they have a true ally in the U.S. at this point!

The 6th Fleet
Sixth Fleet, headquarterd on its command ship USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20), consists of approximately 40 ships, 175 aircraft and 21,000 people. The Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean is the major operational component of Naval Forces Europe. The principal striking power of the Sixth Fleet resides in its aircraft carriers and the modern jet aircraft, its submarines, and its reinforced battalion of US Marines on board amphibious ships deployed in the Mediterranean. Commander, Sixth Fleet has both US national and NATO responsibilities. He reports to the Commander-In-Chief, US Naval Forces, Europe (CinCUSNavEur) in the US chain of command and to CinCSouth when the Sixth Fleet operates as part of NATO as StrikForSouth. The CinC Naval Forces Europe, based in London, is responsible for US naval operations in the European area, and also holds the NATO position of CinC Allied Forces Southern Europe, responsible to the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe. The CINC Naval Forces Europe does not have administrative responsibilities for support of US naval forces in Europe, which are under the cognizance of CINC Atlantic Fleet.

The United States Sixth Fleet is operationally organized into task forces. Each task force is responsible to the Sixth Fleet Commander for specific functions related to assigned units. The Sixth Fleet Command Ship is the USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20) as the fleet flagship, forward deployed to Gaeta, Italy.

Area of Operations:

Mediterranean Sea.

Headquarters:

Naples, Italy.

I heard a report today that said we did not have a Naval presence in the Mediterranean for the first time in 31 years. Apparently I heard incorrectly.

Regardless, part of the fleet should be closer to the action in case our interests are in danger, like U.S. citizens and our allies in Israel. Not to mention, a show of force is likely to calm the bully down, much like it did when Reagan bombed in the 80's and the Gulf War sent him a message and he aborted his nucleur program.

DW: Sixth Fleet doesn't have any permanently assigned/stationed Carrier Battle Groups. BGs train on the West or East Coast (with one forward deployed exception) and chop to Sixth Fleet operational control once they pass into the 6thflt AOR.

Sarge...you know....I was at a Conference this week which was addressed by a Democratic Congressman. Nice guy, etc., but here's what grabs me: so the Congressman is asked about what happens 4 Mar. The Congressman...as though reading from a script.....notes that not funding a budget would result in catastrophic consequences. He then trots out the other part of the trope about proposed cuts being excessive and often nonsensical. what really sets me off is that these people never assume responsibility that we face this eleventh hour, at the precipice, calamity BECAUSE THESE WIDGETS INTENTIONALLY REFUSED TO PASS A BUDGET WHEN THEY OWNED THE HOUSE AND THE SENATE. the media...naturally....ignores this little piece of history as well. just another in a long line of lies, dissembling.......brazen arrogance.

The Commander, Sixth Fleet plans and conducts contingency operations including evacuation of U.S. citizens;

Im sure you did hear the were no naval ships in the med, when they were trying to explain why they sent ferrys. Im sure the media mentioned or alluded to that in someway or another. There is no way the entire 6th fleet was outside the med, they sent a couple ships to the pirate thing aboard the quest a couple days ago and there are probably a couple more circling arround affrica or in port.

What I think is funny is every other nation sent their warships in to evacuate their people, and the only warships any American left on were from other countries.

I would really like to know who profits from us using those ferrys, especially when a duty of the 6th fleet is "evacuate US citizens" http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/navy/c6f.htm.
