Since we've been discussing about whether Clausen should be the pick at four. I thought of a way to get a good staring left tackle to protect him and Campbell with the #37 pick:

http://walkingdeadmanblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/draft-trade-scenario-few-are-thinking.html

With rumors floating that Sam Bradford will go #1 and Russel Okung could go #2, here is a scenario I would like the Redskins to think about.

There are rumors that the Skins will go QB at #4 and that QB would obviously be Clausen with Bradford gone. If the Skins do this, they still need a LT and by the time the Skins get to #37, most of the top picks (Okung, Bulaga, Davis) will be gone. There's Bruce Campbell, but he's a boom or bust guy (and will probably be taken by the Raiders at #8 anyway). Vladimir Ducasse played well in the Senior Bowl but many think he's better as a guard. Brown is very raw and Roger Saffold also would have to be developed.

There's another option: Trade #37 to the Ravens for Jared Gaither. The Ravens could use more picks after trading their 3rd and 4th rounders to the Cardinals for Anquan Boldin and the Ravens have a LT in waiting in Michael Oher.
Despite the injuries last year, Gaither is a proven LT and a better option at #37 than most of the rookies that will be there and since the Skins have spent little this offseason, Gaither could be given that money that the Skins in the past would have thrown at Dansby, Rolle or Peppers.

Of course if Okung falls to the Redskins at #4 we shouldn't have to worry about this scenario hopefully.

Thanks to Dave-O over at Staying Medium for suggesting the Skins going after Gaither in this post.

The Ravens have Gaither as a 1st round RFA tender, so I think they might be willing to trade him for a early 2nd......just a thought.

Can't say I would be opposed. He has proven he his a legitimate LT in the NFL and no one cay say that about any of the LT's in the draft with all their promise. The only downside is what you have mentioned, the injury or injuries. Didn't he suffer an injury in his rookie campaign as well?

If they will take a 2nd for gathers I say trade even if we get an OT in the first.

WD, as soon as I found out about the Ravens possibly shopping Gaither around I couldn't help a thought of "damn...it would be interesting to have this monster on the line"-and then I ran across your IIWII piece. I like your idea-pretty shrewd calculating there too, my friend, I'm impressed. :)

P.S. I do believe we're going to see some almost backroom type wheeling-and-dealing out of Allen and Shanny between now and the start of next season-it will be, I hope at least, fun to watch.

If the Ravens are willing to trade with us, it will cost us more than just our 2nd round pick, simply because it's the Skins. I'm pretty sure we'll have to throw in a player or another pick.

Agreed. Maybe we get them to agree on Campbell for Gaither, straight up. I mean, they're both 1st round tenders, right? Make it happen, Bruce!

I'd hate to see us use a 2nd rounder on Gaither. He's a decent player but has had his share of injury issues. Using a 2nd rounder plus a bunch of cap space on a guy with an injury history that was selected in the supplemental draft due to academic problems is going out a bit too far on a limb IMHO.

His first round tender tells me the Ravens feel pretty much the same way about him that we do about JC, i.e. OK for another year or so until a better option comes along.

Devil's Advocate:

Wouldn't Gaither be a bit too large and slow to play in Shanny's Zone Blocking Scheme? He is 6'9 340.

Let's take Okung as an example: 6'5 307

Or how about two guys that Shanny drafted:

Clady 6'6 325
Ryan Harris 6'5 300

Just doesn't seem like he would be quick and athletic enough to fit in this system, but who knows, they re-signed Mike Williams.

I really wouldn't be surprised it we ended up with Okung and Bruce Campbell (who is very athletic) but does have consistency problems. However, he will probably drop to the second.

Ok, I have been liking what I hear in this thread. We should have taken Gaithers in the first place in that supplemental draft and I would not be opposed to bring him in here.

If we draft Okung and decide to bring Gaither in, I think that would push Gaither over to the right side. Ok, I could live with that.

Now, if we brought in, the freak Bruce Campbell and Russell Okung, I could live with that too.

Does anyone notice a theme? I want Offensive line brought in here! Brian Bulaga, Russell Okung, Anthony Davis, Trent Williams, Bruce Campbell, and Charles Brown appear to be more than capable NFL tackle prospects. In this particular draft, we have to take advantage of taking one of these guys!!!

If this happens, I'd be pretty happy.
Despite OM's article on Clausen, I'm standing by my opinion that Okung is the best fit for the Skins at #4 if he's there.
