Was there any doubt?
Did you not watch the documentary last night?

;)

Nope, I was working.

And yes, I had my doubts. I'll be honest, I was holding out hope for a week 1 start, but I've been thinking this was all to mess with our first several opponents, so that they didn't know who to prepare for.

One thing I got from the espn special...Griffin is moving and cutting very aggressively...I had not seen a lot of film on him this preseason and I couldn't believe how aggressively he was moving. You'd never guess he was coming off reconstructive surgery. He looks as fast and athletic as he did at the start of last season. I found that very reassuring.

Oh, well way to ruin my joke.

But yeah, there's no way you could have watched that and not known he was starting. Dude's a freaking animal.

This is big news.

I'd really prefer that he sits for the first two to four games, but if he's ready, this is great.

Roy Helu was confirmed this morning as Alfred's backup. Figured that was a no brainer too.

More interested in the mechanics of the decision. was this Doc Andrews alone (as we have been told) or is there more going on? Guess it doesn't matter - unless Robert is hurt in one of the first few games. if he is, the proverbial you know what will hit the fan.

I don't think so. It's clear that the most cautious person in this whole process has been Shanahan. There's no way they'd let Griffin go in week 1 without Dr. Andrew's unequivocal okay. How many times has Shanahan used the word 'setback' over the past 6 months? I'll bet it's thousands of times.

Any QB can get hurt at any time. Guessing the assessment here is that Griffin is no more likely to get injured than any other QB at present and that waiting another month or two to play him isn't going to reduce the chance of injury. Did you watch the special? Griffin is going hard at full speed - and I mean hard. He looked ready to me.

on board with ya. just reflecting the thoughts voiced on morning sports talk shows I have heard over the last mo. this gets into the deeper dynamic between Robert and Shanahan. fingers crossed - no injuries.

Sports media would be all over Shanahan either way. If theyd elected to hold Griffin out, they'd spend that period stirring the pot on how disgruntled RG3 is and how there's a rift between Shanahan and him and create a QB controversy with Cousins. If he starts Griffin he's being reckless and selfish and probably pressured Andrews into approving it.

It's a no-win for Shanahan either way. I think the truth is all physical testing shows he's ready and able to play. So he plays.

I figured Shan would play a little more cat n mouse with philthy. Great news all the same.

Stupid Polumbus better keep him healthy

Yeah... wasn't it supposed to wait until Andrews saw him on Thursday?

The team hasn't announced anything - this is Adam Shefter with 'inside scoop'

Which comes from a source from inside the team, right? A source almost unanimously considered to be Shanahan himself...

So that means a decision was made before Andrews saw him, or Andrews saw him before thursday, or Shefter is just spitting BS.

Doesn't matter to me, I think he's ready and the rest of this is a charade. But I'm not aware of another option in the scenario...

I thought this thread was going to be about Griffin starting the last preseason game against the Bucs, to shake off the rust, because that would be the only thing that would be shocking enough to match the shocking element in the thread title. Because, of course, he's going to start against Philly :)

Who said it was Shanahan? I haven't seen that anywhere. Shefter didn't say that. It could be an assistant trainer or anyone in the organization. It's almost certainly not a higher up - why would they leak it knowing the first question that would be asked is why have you decided in advance of De. Andrews exam?

Btw... Andrews has been checking on Grifins progress throughout. I doubt seriously he doesn't know what he's going to recommend (barring some unforeseen change) for weeks now.
