LONDON - Jack Harrison, who survived the Great Escape plot by Allied prisoners in a German prison in World War II, has died at age 97, his family said.

Harrison died Friday at Erskine veterans' home in Bishopton, Scotland.

As one of the camp's gardeners, Harrison helped dispose of the dirt excavated from three escape tunnels. He was 98th on the list of some 200 inmates designated to make the escape on March 24, 1944, but only 76 got away before guards detected the breakout and raised the alarm.

We are losing so many great men too fast. Not many of these WWII vets around. If you know or meet one, please take the time to listen to their what they have to say.

Sad to hear of his passing. Thanks, Sarge for posting this.

Too right! I read somewhere recently that we are losing them at the rate of some 1500 a day. Tough to believe that we have many left at that rate or even that they are that old.

I know many of them argue that they not, in fact, the Greatest Generation but you can't prove it to me. They continue to be that and I think will be so for me all of my days.
