Mike's right, you can't compare Australian law with American law. We don't have a constitution like yours so the right to bare arms doesn't even enter in to the equation. We have a ban on guns that have absolutely no reason to even be in this country, yet in the USA, the same sort of gun is an every day item. We don't have the hunting like that in the USA, so there is no reason to have a stockpile of weapons. One gun is all that is needed, but in most cases, it is one gun too many! As an island country, immigrants HAVE to make an effort to come here, and when they do, they are expected to abide by our laws. Most do, but it is those with a criminal history, dating back many years, who come here and try to make it like the country they come from, or have ties to. Sorry, but that just doesn't cut it with me. If you choose to come to a country that has strict gun control, and you try to make the law to suit yourself, don't whinge about the harsh treatment you get from the authorities.
We still have gun crime, which includes drive-by's, but these are carried out by those who are known criminals anyway, so there is no way to stop guns being used other than to place a blanket ban on the importation of all firearms. As it stands now, what comes in is dismantled, but can be easily smuggled and assembled when it arrives.
Personally, I will never own a gun, and I doubt I ever will. I have no need to own a gun, not even to protect myself or my family. I have trained dogs for that, and the mess is easier to clean up!
