Fake Beef Seized in China -- Coming Soon to a Dog Food Near You?

September 19, 2013 — This week, police in the Shaanxi province of China reported they had discovered and seized more than 44,000 pounds of fake beef at a local factory.

According to an article published by Shanghaiist, the bogus beef was made from pork that had been treated with paraffin and other industrial chemicals.

The idea was to take considerably cheaper pork and make it look more like it came from more costly beef cattle.

Apparently, selling fake meat in China is a fairly common practice. Medical Daily reported that over a a three-month period earlier this year, there were 904 people arrested for “meat-related offenses.”

According to that same report, one gang of meat crooks had already earned $1.6 million by selling rat, fox, and mink meat to unsuspecting customers.

Fake beef seized from factory by police in China

Selling fake beef isn't only a crime in China — it's apparently also a huge problem. Over a period of three months at the start of 2013, there were 904 people arrested for "meat-related offenses." Yes, that's really a thing that people were arrested for. Now the steak swindlers have struck again. Police in Xi'an in Shanghai province recently seized 22 tons of fake beef in a factory. The mystery meat was actually pork that had been treated with paraffin wax and industrial salts to make it look like beef. Not quite a "Soylent Green" situation, but still: How disappointing would it be if you were really craving steak and got a lousy old pork chop instead? — By Nick Mangione [Source]

Chinese police seize tons of bogus meat - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Police in China have spent three months seizing bogus meat, some of it fake beef or mutton made out of fox, mink and rat.

They snatched up around 20,000 tons of illegal products, according to state news agency Xinhua.

In 382 cases, officials arrested 904 suspects for passing off counterfeit meat, meat injected with water or diseased flesh to consumers, the news agency said.

Other offenders allegedly added chemicals illegally to their products, the agency said.

Two "meat processing and selling dens" in southwest China allegedly used hydrogen peroxide to process chicken claws, Xinhua said.

The raids were the first part of a food safety enforcement campaign from the Ministry of Public Security, Xinhua reported.

Next phase: dairy product crimes.

A ministry official told the news agency it expects to find deep-rooted safety problems.
