So I'm watching the Food Network show by the same name, sort of, and it got me thinking, where are my favorite places to eat for good ole fashioned soul food/BBQ/diners, etc?

I'll start. :)

The Virginia Diner in Wakefield, VA is a little slice of heaven for me. Their country fried steak is so good, makes you wanna smack your momma. Good eats. Pierce's BBQ in Williamsburg used to be REALLY good, now it's pretty good. Buzz N' Neds in Richmond has them beat now, imo.

I need to find some of these places out here in the Shenandoah Valley. Having said that, I travel a lot for work, and may end up somewhere near to you some day.

Sooooo, what do YOU recommend?

Ristorante Fabio, in Cape Coral Fl.

Ristorante Fabio

This is the one and only Italian restaurant I will eat at.

Good friends with the family, and eat there as often as I can. I made a reservation for last night. Knowing my tastes, they made a special dish just for me, short ribs over polenta, with a nice sweet red sauce reduction.

There menu has most of the common Italian dishes, but it's the specials I'm normally eating. In about 11 years, we haven't had a single bad meal. Eddy is the heart of the place, and Viv (Viviana) is on the same level in the kitchen.

My family is treated like royalty there, and we consider the Ciminati and Vena families part of our own.

You make it to SW Florida, you'll dine with la famiglia.

Good lord Pete. I might finally have to make a road trip and meet you in the flesh after that review. Btw - can you believe we're approaching a decade of friendship and have never met? The internet is a strange thing :)

Funny, but I was thinking about that last night actually. It actually saddens me having only met Mark and Art out of the old crew.

Some day brother....

Diners. Bah. Got one on every corner in NJ. Some are good, some need to be burned to the ground.

Anthony's Pier 4 (Boston) for lobster.
Armand's Pizzeria (Alexandria) for pizza.
Space Needle (Seattle), Captain George's (Southeast Virginia), Lobster House (Cape May, NJ) for seafood.
Geno's (Philadelphia) for chessesteaks.
Bellagio (Las Vegas) for steaks.
Full Moon BBQ (Hoover, AL) for BBQ.
Sollo Bella (Jackson, NJ) for Italian food.
Per Se (New York, NY) for French cuisine.
Avila's (El Paso) for Mexican food.
Dyer's Burgers (Memphis) for burgers.
Ching's Table (New Canaan, CT) for Chinese.

Armands, holy crap, I haven't been there since I was a kid. Great pizza, my God they were good! Thank you for that trip down memory lane, BB.

I'll admit that I haven't been there in a number of years, but this is judging off of what I remember. If it is still the same (the food that is - but good atmosphere as well), then it has my vote.

If you wind up in the Danbury Ct area, TK's American Cafe, home of the Ugly American.....

TK's

I lived at this place for 5 years. I lost count on how many times they have won best wings in the state. There chili is the best I've had at any eatery.

The owner Tom Kennedy is a great guy, and major sports fan. He was one of the first to have a TV in every booth. Small, home town place.

Armand's Pizzeria (Alexandria) for pizza.

Geno's (Philadelphia) for chessesteaks.

Armand's no longer has any restaurants in VA. They still have them in MD and DC though.

Geno's? I'm not a Pat's guy but I think both Pat's and Geno's are overrated.

Bob & Edith's in Arlington is a classic diner, and has been around forever. Was a staple of my youth.

Smitty's in Hampton has good burgers. Das Waldcafe in Newport News is a great place for German food.

For seafood...only eat what I fix at my house. Saturday night fixed fried soft crabs and steamed clams. I know where this seafood came from, which one reason only eat what I cook.

In Poquoson there is Anna's Pizza, Mr. C's Pizza, and a Little Philly's Cheesesteak.
