Clearing Up Hankerson's Hip Surgery

So, we have Brandon Marshall who came back strong, and Jammal Brown who hasn't really come back at all from this type of surgery. Here's to hoping Hank is more BMarsh and less Brown...

I don't think they'll rush him back, what with all the new WRs on the roster. Wouldn't be shocked to see him on the PUP for the beginning of the season either.

Redskins receiver Leonard Hankerson had right hip surgery more than three months after his injury because of how doctors evaluated his rehabilitation progress, not because he suffered an acute setback, coach Mike Shanahan said at the NFL annual meetings last week.

Hankerson's right hip popped out and back into the joint when Miami safety Reshad Jones tackled him from behind late in a 20-9 loss on Nov. 13. The trauma to the joint resulted in a torn labrum.

Hankerson rehabilitated his hip for more than three months before having surgery to repair it in February. Doctors scheduled that evaluation period all along, Shanahan said.

"The doctors recommended he not have surgery," Shanahan said. "They wanted to wait through it. Then after a certain amount of time, they make the decision whether he should have surgery. He should be ready to go, my understanding is, by June 1."

Hankerson is expected to compete for the starting flanker (Z receiver) spot in his second season. The Redskins, however, signed free agent Josh Morgan, which should ease their dependence on Hankerson coming off of injury.

Just ask Jammal Brown how difficult it is to recover from hip labrum surgery. Perhaps that comparison is unfair, though, considering Brown and Hankerson don't have the same body type.

The Redskins hope Hankerson bounces back as receiver Brandon Marshall did after having a similar surgery in 2009. Coincidentally, Shanahan has compared Hankerson to Marshall, whom he drafted in Denver in the fourth-round in 2006.
