Break down of how many we rush

I went through all the defensive snaps and counted how many people we rushed at Tampa Bay. I didn't keep track of field position per play, I just didn't have it in me to do it when I started and now I regret it because that's probably an important factor.

Sometimes, on run plays, it's really hard to tell who was blitzing and just not on the line of scrimmage and who diagnosed a run play quickly and stepped up to fill a hole. I had to use my judgement on these plays as to who was blitzing and who wasn't.

Also - it's impossible to tell around the goal line, I did the best I could. You'll see in some spots I just didn't even try...

If anyone wants to throw these in excel and do further analysis based on down and distance, or match them up with the play log on field position, I'll add it to the original post (with credit of course!), or just post a link to your post in the original Post. My head hurts too much to do anymore

what i noticed in watching:
we never once sent just our 3 down linemen.
kerrigan was almost exclusively a blitzer
we didn't have very many negative plays
the two halves are very similar except for the huge different in how many times we sent 5 - there were obviously fewer players in the 2nd half.
We give up the least big plays when we rush 4, the most when we rush 5.

edit: added the big plays part.

I've entered all the data into excel. I'm trying to come up with some meaningful graphs to help make the information more easily digested/meaningful.

I'm having a harder time coming up with ways to chart/graph this data than I thought I would


Looks like, according to this spread, we were much more successful rushing 4 than anything else.

note: 0 for distance means GOAL to go
Here's a plot of how many we rushed based on the distance of the down.
The trend looks like Haslett likes to send 5 in shorter distance, and 4 in longer distance, which suggests him being more conservative than aggressive (as many posters here have complained about).

There may be a slight exaggeration in that based on the fact that in short distances teams run the ball more often (i'm making that up, maybe not true?) and it's easy to mistakenly classify someone as a 'blitzer' when in reality they were quick to recognize a run play and commit. There may also be no exaggeration. Something to keep in mind...

Here's the same break down, distance to go vs number rushed, except this time I broke apart passes vs runs.
Runs are the red diamonds and Passes are the red Squares. There were a lot more passes.

So basically I'm turning this thread into my playground for excel
My hope is to eventually come up with some meaningful charts/graphs/etc that may shed some light on something. If nothing else I'm learning about Excel

I'm hoping to come up with some standards so I can just plug in data after a game and see meaningful things. Any feedback is appreciated, and honestly needed. If nothing is meaningful then it is what it is. If you like something let me know, if you think I should try something please let me know. So the tool I just learned about are pivot tables/charts.
Here's a break down of total yards gained against the defense, broken down first by down, and then in each down it's broken down by how many we rushed. There's two columns per section, one for pass one for run.




Here's the same information, using the average yards per rush per down


And to give it a little context, here's the number of plays in each situation. So for example, there 6 plays where it was 3rd down and we rushed 5 and Tampa Bay passed the ball. Similarly there was only 1 play where it was 3rd down we rushed 5 and Tampa Bay ran the ball.

I'm trying to get away from the scatter plots because they can't show frequency, or at least I don't know how to do intensity graphs in excel (yet! ) So if there were 10 of one thing it only shows one mark... if there were 2 it also shows 1 mark... and there's no context there.

It works fine when you're looking at yards (the first scatter plot), but football has a lot of very fine hard numbers, so it doesn't fit well
