While I have posted and believe the club needs to be wary of players with the bio and attitude profile of a Shaun Rogers, the fact the team is interviewing free agents for two of the most pressing roster needs, NT and FS, this early is at least some comfort that the front office sees the club much as we do.

Both Atogwe and Rogers physically would be significant upgrades on anything the Redskins had in 2010 at their position.

Age at 29 and 32 is a concern even if the attitude questions with Rogers were not there.

It's also apparent that neither player is looking to make a quick move for 'fair value' deal. These guys are going to visit 8-10 teams, although Washington does have thanks to Allen's moves last year a LOT of cap space to work with given a new CBA.

Again, my preference would be to look for 5th and 6th year veterans in free agency when that process starts as these players at 26 and 27 are guys you can build with over the next 3-4 years.

Rogers at 32 is a guy who could help for perhaps a year or two. Supposedly, he wants a deal for $5M a year which seems a bit rich for him given his performance in 2009 and 2010.

But give the Redskins credit. In an environment where few teams are doing anything other than laying off groundskeepers and secretaries, the Redskins are at least looking at their needs going forward.

BT, this brings up a question in my mind that I mentioned on another thread. Is this interest in "positions of need" being shown reflective of a general desire to address those positions by whatever means are available or is it possibly an indicator that those needs will be the targeted ones in free agency and other needs addressed in the draft-WR, QB, perhaps DE...etc.?

It's difficult for me trying to estimate just what direction the FO and coaching staff are going to go so I can try to determine to what extent they've learned from the experience of the past season. They're not a very forthcoming bunch, and add in the uncertainty of the CBA situation which could alter everybody's approach to both the draft and FA.

Besides, I'm waiting for the usual off-the-wall, mind blowingly bizarre move from Ashburn so things will at least seem close to normal. :whoknows::yikes::thud::laugh:

OJ Atogwe is exactly the kind of FA the Redskins SHOULD be signing. 29, so he's not ancient (read: has several years of football left), impact player at the FS position, and clearly has a good relationship with the coach. I'm not unhappy with this signing at all, if it does happen (as long as they don't break the bank). And I've heard there's a very good chance it will.

Rogers, on the other hand....but thankfully I've heard he is probably not going to sign with us. More than likely Allen laughed him out of the building when he asked for $5M a year.

EDIT: This draft is also very weak at safety - another reason to sign OJ. Vinny would have taken this opportunity to trade down and draft 4 safeties, since the class was so weak. Ha!

Not sure what to think of this. We definitely have a need there, but not fond of giving out another large contract to any player who will already be 30 when the season starts. Are we rebuilding, or still believing we can possibly compete next season?

Yeah, I gotta say this is a good argument. Is there a FS who will be available next year or the following who could be with the team for 5-7 years but wouldn't because we signed a vet at a high cost for a 2-3 year span.

Rogers would have been a decent rotational player provided we could get him on the cheap. I think Atogwe would be a good player, but for how long and how much?

Talking about FS just irks me! We were robbed of a great one! God Bless you ST!

Atogwe turns 30 before start of the season...but agree otherwise. this would be a good signing.

The Saints brought in a 33 year-old safety through free-agency a couple years ago, and that worked out pretty well for them. Otogwe is no Sharper, but he can still contribute.

There is nothing wrong with bringing in a *few* 30+ year-old guys. The problem is when your roster is filled with them. There's gotta be a nice mix.

Exactly.

We could sign Rip Van Winkle. But if the sumbitch comes in and makes plays that help to win ballgames, it will be hailed as a brilliant move.

Flop, and we start heating up the oil.

At the end of the season, Pittsburgh was the oldest team in the league. And the old bastards had enough left in the tank to play into February.

And then lose the Superbowl to the second youngest team in the NFL.

Unfortunately, we won't be bringing in Ryan Kalil. Surprised the Panthers would use their Franchise Tag on a Center but they did. :(

And the year before that?
New Orleans, second oldest team in the league, won the SB, over the second youngest team, the Colts.

Meaning, age is only bad when you lose.

Lose, you're old.
Win, and you're experienced.

Winning...cures.......EVERYTHING.

We need to get better, faster, and younger. Getting better and faster is much more difficult than getting younger. Younger is just math.

It's having the right combination of youth and experience that matters. And, that combination is a little different, for EVERY team, EVERY year.

I really do not want to bring in either of these guys. I think Rogers speaks for himself. I will say that I am not a big fan of Atogwe. He is non aggressive when the ball is on the ground and he is a poor open field tackler. There is a reason he played mostly SS last year.

You do not move a guy that has his ballhawking skills to SS unless there is a major hole in his game. I think Spags is a pretty decent D talent evaluator. If he does not think that Atogwe should be re-signed, then I do not believe that we should sign him. Atogwe said he wanted to re-sign with the Rams, yet he did not. I think there is a reason for that.

At the time Atogwe wanted a deal that paid him $7M a year. So, I think that was the reason no deal with the Rams was consummated.

Atogwe is a much better FS than anything the Redskins have on the roster and is a player the team needed to look at and talk to.

My concern is not that the club didn't necessarily sign Rogers or Atogwe right away, but rather that Allen thinks veteran players should be willing to come to a losing team in Washington on an incentive, low-base deal.

Yes, Washington is now viewed as a losing team. Finishing 4-12 and 6-10 does that to you.

Like the Nationals, the Redskisn now have to pay a 'premium' to get recognizable players to come here.

As soon as Allen and Shanahan understand that we will be able to bring in players who are a little more productive than the Maake Kemoeatus and Jammal Browns who entered the doors at the Park hobbling on one foot and still in the middle of rehab.

Just signed Atogwe for five years announced by Schefter on Twitter.

For once, it appears the Redskins did not brutally overpay. Also garnering offseason interest from the Broncos, Bills, and Cowboys, Atogwe’s annual average of $5.2 million sounds reasonable for a safety who has accounted for the third most turnovers among NFL defensive backs over the past five seasons. (Only Charles Woodson and Ed Reed have more.)

:claps: :clap2: :thewave:

Yes, this seems very reasonable to me for a very good player. Atogwe paired with Landry will give us a very good backfield.

You know, when they actually pay football again...

Not a big fan of Atogwe, but there are no other good options out there at the FS position. Even the FS at the combine stunk it up. I read that there was absolutely no speed in that group.

I am not extremely happy, but I think it was the smart move.
