Around the NFL - Free Agency / Transaction / Injury thread

Anthony Firkser signs a 1 year deal to stay with Tennessee, I didn't realize he was a RFA.

Sorry Boone

49ers sign Trent Williams to a 6 year $138 million extension, including $55 million guaranteed. Shows you can be a blatant jackass and still hit the jackpot somewhere.

Damn. I wanted him in DC. Seems like we could have done better than that but maybe they aren’t looking for a TE in free agency at all?

Denver Broncos rescind the RFA tender from Philip Lindsay, appears it was a mutual decision

Get that good backup QB money while he still can - nothing like clipboard pay

yeah and at $7mil per year is crazy.

They have Josh Jacobs and Jalen Richard....

Maybe they think he might have some trade value during the season ?

TV

This is the most bizarre move I’ve seen since the Herschel Walker trade. What????

Mariota takes a re-worked contract... big BIG time paycut considering he was on the books for $17 mil if he made it to the new league year with Vegas

Good for Marcus and the Raiders. I wonder when these teams are going to realize how damaging these massive qb money deals are to a team. It destroys their cap space. Watch how many players start dropping off the Chiefs and Cowboys because they won't be able to pay them. I'm not sure any one player is worth that much dough.

Except that the prospects for a monumental increase in the salary cap in coming years may totally eliminate that potential issue. I almost wonder if the teams that are being uber-cautious and conservative in regards to their current cap management aren't going to be the one's regretting it down the road, not the teams that spent wildly? The reason why teams are paying QBs crazy money is because NFL revenues (setting aside the COVID season) keep going up, and up, and up. And have to believe that the salary cap is going to follow that same arc in the coming years. If it does, the crazy spending we are seeing by some teams now may not hurt them one bit.

It's been widely reported by front office personnel that the Mahomes deal is a steal for the Chiefs because of this. The market is going to continue to re-set itself and it's not going to drop any time soon. Mahomes restructured this years portion of his deal, but next year he is a ~$36mil against the cap... that's about 17.5% when you take into account some roll overs and other stuff. Dak accounts for just over 17% with his $33.2 mil hit.

The cap is going to go up... and with the money that is being floated around for these TV deals it's going to go up FAST. If you extrapolate 17% of your cap for a premium market value QB, if the cap gets to $300 mil by the end of Mahomes deal, that would be $51 mil per year... and that' 17% flat. We could see QBs like Justin Herbert or Trevor Lawrence (if he lives up to it) being a $60 mil / year QB....
