Are the Skins that good.....or is Sean Payton that good ?

The announcers during the game pointed out how great a play-caller Payton was/is, and could have made a huge difference in the game......then again, those were the same announcers that said "Danny Smith is one of the best ST coaches in the league".

So, how much of a difference would Payton have made in the play-calling, etc ?

If the Saints continue to have trouble against teams they "should" beat-like the Panthers, then I would expect a lot of the failure to be put on Payton's absence-if they reverse the flow and wind up, like, 13-3 and winning the NFC South handily then there might be a different take on their loss to the Redskins, maybe not-it was the opener and they didn't have any real game tape on RG3 or the Skins so that could be a mitigating factor.
 
Considering I think majority of the reason we won was because the saints were out coached, I think Payton's absence was a big difference.


I have no idea if him being there results in the Saints winning or not, but I know it gives them a better chance. It's completely possible that Shanahan would have outcoached Payton too.
 
Blah, Blah................commentators are going to try and find ANY reason to point to why the Saints lost to the Redskins. Why? Because so many of them got it wrong :)

The Saints lost to the 7-9 Seahawks in a huge upset in the playoffs and Payton was on the bench of a 13-3 club that failed to come back and win that game.

So, how much of a difference did he make there?

The Saints had a number of advantages going into this game:

1. Continuity of quarterback and skill players on offense over the past 2-3 years
2. Veteran offensive line that has played together.
3. Playing indoors at home with a loud crowd that often prevents other teams from calling audibles on third downs with noise.
4. A Redskins team whose starting QB, WR and #1 WR were all starting their first NFL game together.

Oh, and the Redskins lost that #1 receiver right after he torched the defense for an 88 yard TD.
 
The Saints scored 62 points last year with Pete Carmichael calling the plays so I'll just let the common taters' garbage float in the wind.
 
I mean, they put up 32 points, and were in the game until the very last snap. We'll never know what Payton's presence would have meant to that club, but the good news is, we'll never have to! We get the W no matter what. :)
 
The Saints have lost a mess of close games because their defense is as bad as the Redskins. They don't have many playmakers on that side of the ball and of the ones they do none of them are on the back end.

They played the Packers close and if they had kept Tracy Porter and drafted another corner might be 2-2 instead of 0-4.
 
but again you can question a team that breaks its own scoring record taking a running back with their #1 pick when they lose their best cover corner in free agency :)

Loomis must have been distracted by the bounty gate scandal because over the past 4-5 years the Saints haven't made that many personnel gaffes in the draft or free agency, that's how they have been able to be a consistent 11-12 win team.
