Another Former Redskins QB Takes a Pot-Shot at RG3

As far as RG3 being-or seeming to be-"cocky" versus "confident", my take is that it is more personality than attitude. People, including of course NFL players, have different personalities-some are quiet and soft spoken, some are loud and brash, some are all different shades of in-between,. What I see in RG3 is what I would call "exuberance"-an almost playful excitement, a "hey this is fun and I can do it pretty well and I can't help but show it" that is taken by some-like T. Banks as "bragging." I think Banks got this one wrong.

The only things I remember about Tony Banks are first that he brought a dog to training camp and Marty made him send the beast home; and second I remember that Banks ran an offense that had one audible and even that had to be called in from the booth.

I don't know if I would trust Banks to give me advice on a game of checkers, let alone the quality of a qb in the NFL.

RG3 just needs to focus on his game. I hate all this BS.

Confident does not equal cocky. RG3 is confident. You want that in your quarterback. If the quarterback is not confident he won't push the envelope and will wither under criticism. There is a lot of stuff flying around right now and hopefully RG3 will have enough confidence that none of it will stick on him.

All the chatter doesn't mean a thing. Can't wait until the real games begin!!

HTTR!!!

I absolutely do not get ANY impression that RG3 is overly-cocky.
If anyone actually believes a kid like this is cocky, he would have to be a complete pushover, in order to convince those kinds of people he was not cocky.

Well, even if he is extremely confident, I will be surprised if he doesn't at least have a few humbling experiences in his first pro year. I'm not worried about cockiness, it's really a lack of confidence that will sink a guy at the NFL level.

Again, let's consider the source. Tony Banks is hardly an authority on NFL quarterbacks. His own playing career was less than stellar.

Banks is most famous for the fact he was the starting qb on teams in St. Louis and Baltimore JUST BEFORE they went on to win the Super Bowl with other players at the helm.

Banks' viewpoint of RG3 being "cocky" has nothing to do with how good or bad of a QB he was during his career...it has everything to do with him misunderstanding what RG3 was actually saying.

Griffin basically said "If you're elite in college, you can be elite in the NFL...but it's going to require a lot of hard work. I'm looking forward to putting in that work, and I'm not going to let the fact that I'm a rookie give myself excuses for failure."

There isn't an ounce of cockiness in that statement...tons of confidence and shows he's rooted in the reality that his talent alone won't get him far. He's able to communicate that confidence effectively, and that's something a lot of athletes (hell, people in general) can't do.

I think many are discounting Banks because he was a sub par QB, that does not disqualify him from being a pundit. In fact it gives him a better point of view to criticize the position of NFL QB than most of us.

The one thing that Banks seemed to focus on most to draw his"cocky" reference was the idea of patenting his moniker RG3. Griff can come across as cocky. We don't want to admit it because the he's our QB now, but I guarantee if he was a Dallas Cowgirl many here would be calling this kid cocky.

The reality lies somewhere in between cocky and confident. He has displayed both. And like Califan mentioned, this does not mean he will be unsuccessful on the field. I think we all see something that is more promising than most QB's who have come into the league in a long time. I think he still has a lot to prove and like I said before I think he is maximizing on his earning potential, but there is a hint of cockiness to this kid. Like I said before, while I prefer the silent-do your talking on the field-type, I look forward to seeing this kid's confidence/cockiness transfer to many wins on the field.

Exactly...and isn't that a true statement, regardless? Elite college players are selected high in the draft because they are expected to become elite NFL players...it ain't rocket surgery! The fact that he made that quote shows that he not only recognizes that, but isn't afraid to face it. Confidence!

You'd like to think former players would exhibit at least a little understanding of context, tone, etc., when it comes to commenting on some other player's answers to media questions. Banks doesn't know RG3. He didn't even hear the RG3 comments he's spouting off about or the questions those comments were in response to.

He made broad, baseless assumptions on what little he heard or read about another player's comments in response to direct questions. No better than any other meathead commentator or fan on the internet will do.

Only reason his "take" is on the radar is he was a mediocre player once who local sports radio could get on the air for chicken scratch money to fill the interminable offseason 24/7 airwaves void.

Don't spend it all in one place Tony.
