Week twelve is in the books and now we take a look at how the entire team fared against the Giants. Which Redskins team would show up? Would it be another humble loss to a despised rival or a huge win? Would the team be yelling “Do you like that”? We have all the answers (well, most) for this week. So now it is time to make some sense of it all as BBQ hands out grades and evaluations. Feel free to offer your own grades, evaluations, and opinions. Also, we have some questions to close out week twelve.
Let’s take a look at the grades.
Quarterbacks:
It wasn’t a 158.3 rating, but Kirk Cousins was actually better in this game overall. We could nitpick on a possible pick six or an ill-advised jump pass, but he had command of the game throughout. Beating a very tough division rival deserves due recognition.
Grade: A-
Running Backs:
Alfred Morris provided timely rushes and had a solid day. The final first down was classic Almo. Matt Jones did well on third downs and had a great screen pass reception that went for forty-five yards. Chris Thompson had minimal impact, but did have a reception for nine yards.
Grade: B+
Wide Receivers:
DeSean Jackson had another game with a huge impact. The quick count by Kirk Cousins allowed Jackson to capitalize on the sixty-three yard touchdown. Pierre Garcon provided timely catches and Jamison Crowder is now firmly entrenched in the slot. Also, Andre Roberts should not be used on fly patterns.
Grade: B+
Tight Ends:
It’s official. Jordan Reed is an elite tight end. He continues to stretch the field and provide crucial receptions at opportune moments. He does need to watch the downfield penalties and correct it. Derek Carrier added some punch to the running game as he blocked very well on key downs.
Grade: B
Offensive Line:
An excellent day for the offensive line as they neutralized one of the better defensive lines in the league. Downfield blocking was superb on runs and screen passes. This unit provided great pockets in the passing game, but needed to be more assertive inside the one yard line.
Grade: A
Defensive Line:
Chris Baker was simply dominant. Terrance Knighton was able to effectively take on two blockers as needed and stepped up to be a disruptive presence in the running game. The line provided the linebackers with plenty of pass rushing opportunities.
Grade: A+
Linebackers:
Will Compton is now established as a starter and rightfully so. He was solid as was Trent Murphy, Perry Riley, Preston Smith, and Ryan Kerrigan. In their best performance of the season, they were excellent in all phases of the game.
Grade: A+
Cornerbacks:
The corners were absolutely fantastic. Will Blackmon played his finest game of the season – forget the insane catch by Odell Beckham. Baushad Breeland had excellent jams on OBJ. Quinton Dunbar – what a game! Kyshoen Jarrett is simply incredible – he was effective in all aspects of the game and played corner, safety, and inside linebacker at times. Wow.
Grade: A+
Safeties:
It was interesting to see Dashon Goldson playing at strong safety and DeAngelo Hall at free safety. They were great, but DeAngelo looked a bit rusty and committed two costly penalties. Kyshoen Jarrett was excellent as you already know.
Grade: B
Special Teams:
Tress Way was great all afternoon and his last punt was a masterpiece. Dustin Hopkins provided another solid day, but the blocking let him down on one field goal attempt. The return unit was average, but committed no major mistakes. An untimely penalty on the final punt negated an excellent effort by Way that pinned the Giants very deep with less than twenty seconds remaining.
Grade: B
Coaching:
The team was ready and fully prepared. They were dominant for about fifty of the sixty minutes on the field. The first quarter on offense was a bit shaky, but the first half overall was very good. The defense truly played their best game of the season, but the last few minutes was played differently – as if the coaching changed the strategy to “not lose” instead of continuing to apply pressure. Special teams continued to be a positive.
Grade: B
