Week three is in the books and now we take a look at how the entire team fared against the Giants. Ugly. Very ugly. If you went to bed early, that was a good choice. However, duty calls and we will try to make some sense of it all as BBQ hands out grades and evaluations. Feel free to offer your own grades, evaluations, and opinions. Also, we have some questions to close out week three.
Let’s take a look at the grades.
Quarterbacks:
Kirk Cousins looked shaky and indecisive from the start. Two interceptions (one was absolutely horrible), passes off the target by substantial margins, and underthrown touchdown (potential) passes were common. He did have a 300 yard game, but the successful tosses were late and in catch up mode.
Grade: D
Running Backs:
The running game was a non-factor as the Giants would often stack eight players in the box. Matt Jones had a crucial fumble as he approached the goal line.
Grade: D
Wide Receivers:
The leading receiver on Thursday night was a tight end. The third leading receiver was a running back. While Jamison Crowder is improving each week, the focus shifted a bit to Rashad Ross who had a couple of nice catches. Andre Roberts continues to disappoint.
Grade: C-
Tight Ends:
Jordan Reed was Mr. Clutch again and could’ve produced much more with quality play from the quarterback position. Derek Carrier and Anthony McCoy were all but absent in the blocking and receiving schemes.
Grade: B
Offensive Line:
It was a game of struggles for this unit. The quarterback was hassled and the running game was lackluster.
Grade: D-
Defensive Line:
The defensive line looked like a bunch of fifty year olds with cement in their shoes. The opposing quarterback had no sacks and only minimal pressure. They did shut down the running attack.
Grade: C-
Linebackers:
Only one player stood out for the linebackers – Keenan Robinson. He was all over the field making plays, but Ryan Kerrigan seems to be a bit slow – likely the result of offseason surgery.
Grade: C-
Cornerbacks:
Bashaud Breeland really struggled, but BBQ will give him a bit of a pass. Still recovering from an injury, he actually had good position on two touchdowns, but the receivers made great plays. A healthier Breeland successfully defends both passes. DeAngelo Hall was injured early.
Grade: C
Safeties:
A major step backwards can only describe what happened to this unit on Thursday. Where were the safeties on two long touchdown passes? Unlike the corners, they get no pass on their performances and Jeron Johnson is one player who needs to step it up.
Grade: F
Special Teams:
Another blocked punt by the special teams unit spoils what could’ve been an excellent grade. Tress Way had just one punt that went for thirty-six yards. It’s still early, but Dustin Hopkins continues to make a case for being the real deal. A forty-four yard field goal with ease. Extra points featured zero drama. Kickoffs sailed through the end zone. The return game was holding its own until Rashad Ross provided a dramatic 101 yard kickoff return.
Grade: B
Coaching:
If we could divide it up, the coaching staff would receive failing grades on offense and defense. The team looked lost, dazed, and confused. The game plan was ineffective and lacked any kind of cohesiveness. There were no halftime adjustments that proved to be beneficial. Special teams, although it had a blocked punt, saves the overall grade from being the lowest.
