Browns fans have been talking about Jonny Manziel a lot-particularly recently as to whether he would get the start against the Skins. It looks now like Brian Hoyer will start-maybe the first quarter at least-but we'll get to see "Johnny Football" at some point-maybe in the second quarter.
Anyway, I put together some posts in this (pre)-season's first Redskins Recon because they do relate to Monday night's game and because there is mention and allusions to our old fav, Kyle Shanahan-now the Browns OC.

JFF vs RG3.... will the media be able to contain itself?
This should be an absolute circus, but it will also be interesting in that RG3 is now a known commodity in the NFL. We've seen not only where he started, but the Offensive Coordinator he did it under. Now, we get to see JFF under that same cocrdinator go up against RG3 that is now almost a veteran player.
While this certainly won't be any sort of "tell all" about what we may or may not have in JFF, it should definitely offer us some interesting insight... and lots of fodder for discussion, I'm sure!

Last Saturday was the highest rated preseason game for the NFL Network and would expect next Monday will be the highest rated preseason game for ESPN.

So, its been rumoured that JM gets the start. Doesn't matter reaally but what does, is he does get reps with the starting outfit. The tail end of the good bad and ugly thread from Detroit was the difference between QB pressures between 1's and 2's. Lets see what he got running with JT and Mack etc. Don't know much about the Skins D tbh but the Lions are well thought of and deep so i'd assume its a less stern test.
Also looking to see WR's catching. The deficiencies of thee unit are well documented by some here and its certainly a hot topic amongst observers at camp on social media. These guys need to step up and hopefully we can find some wheat amongst the chaff.
I'm also looking to see if Desir can rebound though they certainly blooded him given the amount of snaps he played last week.
Also looking for more production from the D and the further progress of the 1-2 punch of Tate and West.

I saw somewhere that the 1s were going to play the first half. I think you start Manziel and then depending on how things go, if you want to bring Hoyer in for a series or two at the end, go for it.
I was hoping last week when Manziel came in that we would get the ball back with a chance to run a 2 minute drill but our defense couldn't get the ball back.
I want to see how our defense controls RGIII.... I want to see our run game keep getting better. I want to watch Mingo and Kirksey to see if it's a fluke or if people are exaggerating how good they have looked. I want to see the tackling improve.
On the other side, I want to see RGIII compared to Cousins, I have been hearing that Cousins has looked outstanding so far this year.

Well that's part of my point. If Hoyer's able to do it, then great. Doubt he has movement half the time, but whatevs. The designed stuff is not what you drafted Johnny Football for. It was to extend plays.
I don't think it's terribly unconventional either. You see guys like Kaep, Russell, even Luck and Rodgers throwing on the move a good deal. Roethlisberger has to.

It is maddening to see them toasted badly (and often!) as they crash inside and take themselves out of the play. Should have rotation to help, but it is ugly to watch. Turn it in and the defense can shine.

From what has been reported, both QB's will get reps with the 1's, so if that happens, who starts would actually be a moot point. That would be nice to actually get a side by side comparison with both of them playing with our #1's against the same opponents.
I'd like to see our WR's catch the ball better. I'm looking for them to gain better separation. I'll be watching Desir and McFadden because so far I agree with Vers that McFadden is the better CB.
Stopping the run has been an ongoing problem for a while now. I'm hoping to see some progress there. The coverage unit on ST is another area where I hope to see improvement.
I'll say yet again that I never put much stock into the pre season. We've seen many times how we really look good in pre season, only to turn around and win less than a handful of games. Yet I do think it's realistic to look for progress from one pre season game to the next.

Honestly, I'm a little torn. You could convince me that Manziel benefits from an entire year of watching. Hell, he turns 22 in December! He'll barely be rookie age NEXT year.
But I also feel like Shanahan/Loggains are itching to build an offense around the inevitable starter who happens to bring some unconventional gifts to the table... things Hoyer doesn't bring. It sort of splits their focus, I'd think. Remember that "word is" those two really wanted Manziel. A lot.

He was able to run an effective offense with guys like RG3, Cousins and Schaub under center. He's smart enough to adjust to whoever is under center.
First thing is for Manziel to know and be comfortable with that playbook Shanny designs for him. Until then I don't think he should play. Especially if they want to use read options amd expect him to limit his scrambles.

Manziel opens up the playbook more than Manning, Brees and Brady too. It really means dick all. He's gotta show he can pass from the pocket in the NFL. You can't roll out or run options every play.

Manziel is at his best when looking to pass, and then taking off on a run when defenders least expect it. The read option is just asking for an injury. Let's hope Shanahan doesn't get two promising rookies major injuries early in their careers.

Agree with the first thing completely. He's dangerous when defenders turn their backs, especially vs. a lot of man coverage.
I also agree to an extent about the injury risk. I still think having the RO in the playbook, and utilzied a couple times per game is a big assett.
Running it too much is definitely going to kill Johnny in the long run.

I don't get how he opens up the playbook when
1. He's still learning the playbook. This is a pitfall I've fallen in with him as well. It's great in theory, but he needs to learn the damn thing first.
2. His best assset is his scrambling, which isn't something you call a play for.
Look at his read options from last week. Nor do you frequently try to set up boot legs. So, really, he's not adding any other plays as of right now. Other less athletic QB's can run boot legs, and he has a long way to go with read option.

Just not true, Twiz. Shanahan had Hoyer running playfake rollouts about half the time. His "East Coast Offense" leaves a quarterback in a traditional "pocket" less than any other in the NFL. It's unconventional, built to suit RG3 and therefore Johnny Manziel.
It's built around a ton of movement by a mobile QB, RO, pistol, etc. It's unconventional, like Manziel. And Manziel is absorbing that playbook at a pace that's impressing everyone from Farmer to Loggains.
