The Nuclear Option-in stealth mode?

I wondered if this re-kindling of the cap-space fight betwen the Redskins-and to a lesser extent the Cowboys-and the NFL, and Uncle Roger, and by implication a certain individual associated with the New York Giants organization, was making the news in fan forums around the league and if a Recon might be a good idea.

Well, if Dan Snyder picked this particular time-the Combine, FAs, coaching moves and mock draft fever running thick and heavy throughout the league-in order to be stealthy about this he did a good job. Team after team, fan forum after fan forum carried no mention of the goings-on. Nothing.

NFL forums are filled with Combine news, Alex Smith and Cullen Jenkins and everybody else suddenly up for grabs but nothing about the Redskins, Snyder, cap-space-except their own, not a thread to be found...well, yet anyway.

Nada.

After checking 10 random team's fan boards I began to think this is just too under the radar to be a worthwhile search.

And then I decided to try fans closer to the issue.

I started in Dallas.

Dallas fans are paying attention to this.

I've heard an old saying-"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

That seems to be the case among some Cowboy fans.

Snyder is completely within his rights to do so and I really hope that he does. It would be an open and shut case and I would hope that the court would be punitive against the NFL's leadership who are repeat offenders.

birminghambuckeyes
I hope he goes after the league for collusion. File suit in DC and see what the NFL does.

Judge Doty just threw out the Player's collusion case. I don't see how an owner would have a better chance than the union, who would be the injured party.

skinsscalper
Doty threw out the case because the NFLPA agreed in this last CBA that they had waived any claims of collusion from the past. Dumbest concession ever!

Doty also denied the claim because the NFLPA signed off on the penalties to begin with.

The Redskins/Cowboys case is no where near as dead as the NFLPA's case. The original arbitrator also didn't rule out the Redskins/Cowboys right to take the case to court. All the arbitrator did/didn't do was not rescind the penalties.

Also, the notion that the NFLPA was the injured party in this case is a joke. The damages that could be claimed by the NFLPA are speculative, at best. The REAL injured parties were the ones that were blackballed by a group of owners whom Jerry Jones and Danieal Snyder have combined to generate more revenue for them than entire divisions worth combined.

Awfully fishy that the teams that were illegally under that imaginary salary cap floor weren't also punished for violating the polar end of that handshake agreement, eh?

I would love to see Synder take the NFL to court. It would be interesting to see if Danny boy could delay free agency.

SkinsHokieFan
Bingo. Tampa and JVille were FAR below the floor and "got away with it"

No doubt there is quite a bit of fire behind this smoke.

FuzzyLumpkins
Duty threw it out because of the NFLPA's waiver of any collusion claims prior to the signing of the CBA. The NFLPA tried ot argue duress but Doty rejected the argument. That logically made sense.

Unless there is some secret documents whereby the Redskins agreed to abide by some salary cap then they absolutely have claim.

The Redskins are a privately held firm and market competitors are not allowed to strongarm them into something like payroll limitations to contract parameters.

We know you like the NFL trust but it is what it is.

Smart move by Jerry to let the Skins be the ones going after the league while he has no fingerprints on any of this.

That way if the Skins win, we get our cap space back and if the Skins lose, they are the ones the owners are pissed at and not Dallas. So Jerry can still get his SB since he will not be the guy everybody is pissed at.

Smart move by Jerry here.

burmafrd
sometimes he is not so dumb

This next one, if true, does make one wonder.

dez_for_prez
They were showing Jerry's in bus on NFL AM today and the driver said that yesterday Jerry and Dan were sitting together having a chat. Wonder what that may have been about....

Then I visited where I doubted much sympathy would be found-Giants fans.

My doubt was valid.

Normally I have culled out excessively nasty posts but there wasn't much else where I went.

New York Giants fans have a...uh...different view of things.

This is the most reasonable sounding post I found.

I blame the media and their unwillingness to understand this issue.

The easy story is "it was an uncapped year, therefore no rules." Unfortunately, it takes a few moments of reading and understanding basic accounting to get why the cowboys and redskins were found to have cheated.

It was NOT a matter of what teams spent in salaries or signing bonuses in 2010, but rather that these two teams decided to write off exorbitant previous bonuses into the 2010 year, thus freeing MORE cap space than they were entitled to in 2011 and future years. The league agreed, ahead of 2010 NOT to do this so that teams were not given a competitive advantage, and must fairly feel the effects of previous years of spending.

By the fact that 30 other teams agreed not to do these accounting tricks tells the story.

There is no "collusion" as it was not about $$ spent, but how the accounting would be handled.

But why would we expect anyone from the media to, you know, read and attempt to comprehend when it is far easier to create a sensationalist story.

Almost all the rest, however, were like the following.

'Judgy wudgy, that big bad weague, specially those mean and nasty Giants and their co-owner, are being bad to us. Sure, we maybe violated a rule or two, though we don't think we did, and they punished us, and now we can't compete with everybody else, and that's just not FAIR!(they do a foot stomp, and pout).

Judgy, can you stop that FA for now so that maybe we can work out something FAIR so we can play like them? PLEEEEEEEEASE? Pretty please? Pretty please with sugar on it?'
How about a bounty on an obnoxious owner? Dan is now #1, but Jerruh manages to stay close with his GM credit comment.

HomerJones45
Laughable there is no judge that is going to interfere with the Collective Bargaining Agreement to save these idiots.

mrvax
That God-damed John Mara Again! This guy has messed up the Redskins world. He's kept them out of the playoffs year after year until he finally allowed them to play in 1 game last post-season...provided RG3 suffers a very serious injury.

Now he's forcing the Redskins to suffer through free agency like the other teams. Who the hell does he think he is?

LOL- The NFL should just laugh at the Skins, tell them free agency is delayed and just carry on usual business. Lil' Danny is such a dick.

AcidTest
Snyder will pay lawyers any amount to make frivolous legal arguments, but not spend what is required to fix the dreadful playing surface that is FedEx field? That field may well have cost him his QB for 2013, a QB for whom he gave up two #1s and a #2.

Dry Lightning
Goodell will be the ultimate coward if he gives them one dollar back. They are cheaters who should have lost draft picks AND cap space.

Maybe, as events unfold, there will be more interest througout the league and more comments made, more opinions offered, but like I said, the Combine and upcoming draft are dominating general NFL threads right now.

However, if Snyder does succeed in blowing things up it will absolutely be a "hot topic"

After all, he's always had a talent for making that sort of thing happen. :)
