The Giants Part 2-Season Finale

The holiday season has made for seriously slim pickin's when it comes to NFL fan posts about upcoming games apparently because Giants fans have very little to say about the season finale against the Redskins.

Of course the fact that their own season has been a bit of a disappointment resulting in their attention mostly being turned toward Giants's defeciencies no doubt has something to do with that as well.

Fans of disappointing teams tend to do that

Giants fans don't seem too worried though.

I love this game and I can't wait. Play to win and run up the score if at all possible.

It will be like last years final game when we beat the eagles 42-7., it will prove nothing yet give owners and GM false hope for next year thinking that things are turning around. With no one fired we will be in same boat next year. A team stuck between 7-9 wins and no playoffs and mid level draft pics

I better see a Hakeem Nicks TD in this game. That's all I have to say, because I won't forgive Eli for missing a wide-open Nicks against Detroit for a TD unless Nicks scores one against the Redskins, whom he has shockingly never scored a TD against in nine career games against them.

This reply shows some fans have retained a sense of humor.

.Sean.

I rather he get 117+ yards and no touchdowns so he can have the record for most receiving yards in a season without a touchdown lol

Here are 10 things you need to know heading into Sunday's season finale

10: The number of times the Giants have scored more than 50 points in franchise history, two of which came in wins against the Redskins – 51-21 in 1954 and 53-0 in 1961. The Giants are 10-0 in such games.

9: The number of shutout victories the Giants have in the regular season over the Redskins in franchise history – 1933, 1934, 1936, 1938, 1944, 1946, 1958, 1961, and 2005.

8: The number of times the Giants sacked quarterbacks Gus Frerotte (five times) and Trent Green (three times) in a 1998 victory over Washington. Michael Strahan, Chad Bratzke, and Keith Hamilton each had two while Robert Harris and Christian Peter had one apiece, adding up to the most in series history.

7: The Giants notched a series-high seven interceptions against the Redskins in a 1963 victory at Yankee Stadium – four off quarterback Norm Snead and three from George Izo. For the Giants, the interceptors were **** Lynch and Jimmy Patton, who each had two, while Erich Barnes, Jerry Hillebrand, and Sam Huff notched one apiece.

6: The longest win streak the Giants have in the Tom Coughlin era over Washington is six games, stretching from 2008-2011.

5: The number of times the Giants have rushed for more than 300 yards in a game, including 351 against the Redskins in a 1959 victory. The others were 423 vs. Baltimore Colts (1950), 377 vs. New York Yanks (1950), 309 vs. Chicago Cardinals (1950), and 301 vs. Carolina Panthers (2008).

4: The Giants are looking for their fourth straight win in regular-season finales against divisional opponents. Beginning in 2010, the Giants beat NFC East foes Washington (17-14), Dallas (31-14), and Philadelphia (42-7) to close out the year.

3: The number of times the Giants have thrown for more than 500 yards in a single contest, including Y.A. Tittle’s 505 against Washington in the 1962 game he tied the NFL record for most touchdowns (seven). The others were Phil Simms’ franchise-record 513 against Cincinnati in 1985 and Eli Manning’s 510 against Cleveland in 2012.

2: The number of wins the Giants have against the Redskins in MetLife Stadium. They are 2-1 vs. Washington in the stadium since it opened in 2010, but they are just a combined 4-7 against the NFC East at the home venue. The Giants are 1-3 there against Dallas as well as 1-3 against Philadelphia.

1: The Giants have one postseason victory against the Redskins in franchise history, coming in the 1986 Super Bowl run when they beat Washington 17-0 in the NFC Championship Game. The Giants also have one loss to the Redskins in postseason history. Washington beat them 28-0 in a 1943 divisional playoff game.

"At MetLife Stadium Sunday, 1 p.m.

TV: FOX

Radio: WFAN-AM 660/FM 101.9

Early Line: Giants by 3 1/2

While Dallas and Philadelphia prepare to play for the NFC East title Sunday night at Jerry World, the Giants and Redskins close out the string at the site of Super Bowl XLVIII. The play of both teams has been far from super, but while Washington has questions about the future of its franchise quarterback (Robert Griffin III) – not to mention its head coach (Mike Shanahan) — the Giants are solidly behind theirs as Eli Manning prepares to start his 151st straight regular-season game.

In the spotlight

Giants DE Justin Tuck. The veteran captain has been a constant all season, delivering on the field in a contract year and proving he still has something left as a pass rusher and run stopper. He’s made no secret of his desire to re-sign with the Giants, but this could end up being his last game with the franchise with whom he won a pair of Super Bowls.

Game plan

Backup QB Kirk Cousins has guided the Redskins to two competitive losses – both games decided in the closing seconds – since RGIII was shelved for the season. WR Pierre Garcon was targeted 18 times last week vs. Dallas and again should be a primary player for the Giants to stop. Manning might be forced to throw a lot against Washington, considering the state of the Giants’ backfield

with rookie Michael Cox the only healthy running back coming out of the overtime triumph in Detroit. WR Hakeem Nicks has the most catches in the NFL without a touchdown, so you can bet he’d love to get into the end zone Sunday."

One more Giants blog posting by Ed Valentine@bigblueview

When the NFL scheduled Sunday's season-finale at MetLife Stadium between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins it seemed like a mouth-watering game to look forward to, one that would probably have playoff implications.

Things, of course, did not turn out that way. Sunday's game will instead pit two disappointing teams whose playoff aspirations died a loooong time ago. There will be an NFC East game for all the marbles on Sunday, but that will be the Sunday night game at the Jerry-Dome that pits the forever under-achieving Dallas Cowboys against the upstart Philadelphia Eagles.

Sunday afternoon, about four hours before kickoff of that game, the Giants and Redskins will finish seasons that can only be looked at as disappointments no matter which team emerges with a victory.

All of that, however, does not mean the game is not without intrigue.

For the Giants, there are more than two dozen players who can be free agents after the season ends. Will this be goodbye to wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, defensive end, Justin Tuck, safety Antrel Rolle and other veteran players who have been key parts of the Giants' success over the years? Will there be a shakeup among the coaching staff?

For the Redskins, will this be the final time Mike Shanahan coaches the team? What do you make of the whole Robert Griffin III - Kirk Cousins thing at quarterback? How different will Washington's offense be with Cousins at the helm Sunday instead of Griffin?

The outcome of the game itself may mean little. The end of the game, however, could mean an era of significant change is about to begin for one or both of these teams.

"Era of significant change?", no doubt. A lot of Redskins fans are counting on it.
