Grading the Rookies, Mock Draft

Burner’s Burning Questions – Grading the Rookies, Mock Draft

In this bye week edition of BBQ, we will grade the rookies and do an in-season mock draft. Let’s get right to the first part – grading the rookies.

David Amerson – Amerson has shown flashes of brilliance and the difficulties of playing a high profile position. One area of concern is the bigger plays that he has given up, but he has done well under the circumstances (i.e., a poor defense overall). His pick six at Oakland could be the turning point of the season. Grade: B-

Jordan Reed – Reed has missed one game due to injury, but his impact over three games is obvious. He has thirteen catches and one touchdown. That puts him on pace for fifty-two catches and four touchdowns for the season – impressive numbers for a rookie. Grade: A-

Philip Thomas – Grade: Incomplete

Chris Thompson – Thompson improved during the preseason, but he was still a surprise selection for the fifty-three man roster. He has struggled with many facets of the return game and is starting to see less playing time. Grade: F

Brandon Jenkins – With the depth at the linebacker positions, it has been difficult for Jenkins to see playing time. He had a solid preseason and the few regular season appearances have been steady – not spectacular, but no glaring mistakes either. Grade: B

Bacarri Rambo – Rambo was hopeful of making an impact, but was benched two games ago. His play has been atrocious to say the least and there is a reason why he fell to the sixth round. The hope is that he can learn this year and make significant strides in 2014. Grade: D-

Jawan Jamison – Grade: Incomplete

The Redskins rookie class is being led by Amerson and Reed. Both could be bona fide superstars in the years to come. Jenkins could be a reliable backup or occasional starter in a few years. Thomas can’t be evaluated until next season. The remainder of this rookie class is a disappointment. The entire glass earns a C+ from BBQ. What are your grades? Do you agree or disagree with this report card?

The Bye Week Mock Draft

The only time an in-season mock draft by BBQ comes during the bye week. It is early this season, so another mock will be added after game ten. Team needs center on offensive line, defensive line, free safety, and wide receiver.

Round 2: James Hurst, OT, North Carolina
Hurst is an intriguing prospect who could flourish on the right side in the NFL. He had a very good game in September against Jadeveon Clowney, the talented South Carolina defensive end.

Round 3: O’Dell Beckham, WR, LSU
The Redskins would like to add a talented receiver in the slot and Beckham could fill such a need. He has good returner skills as well.

Round 4: Andrew Norwell, G, Ohio St.
The Redskins add a talented guard in the fourth. Norwell has the ability to play right tackle and either guard position too. He figures to be a very flexible player in the zone blocking scheme, but his calling is most likely a guard.

Round 5: DaQuan Jones, DT, Penn St.
Jones is a big body with plenty of talent. A run stuffer who can occupy blockers, he is a good fit for Washington’s 3-4 defense.

Round 6: Marion Grice, RB, Arizona St.
Grice is an underrated, but appreciated running back for the Sun Devils. He can catch out of the backfield and is a strong, powerful runner. He has good speed, field awareness, and pocket presence (pass protection). Grice would do well in the blocking schemes that the Redskins employ.

Round 7: Marcel Jensen, TE, Fresno St.
Jensen is a massively sized tight end who is on record pace for personal bests. A good blocker at the line and downfield, Jensen is a slightly bigger version of Logan Paulsen, but with better receiving skills. The Redskins will be moving on from Fred Davis and Jensen is a very capable replacement.

We are still four games away from the season’s midpoint. As mentioned previously, the bye came early this year, so the mock and rookie grades came much sooner than normal. After week ten we will revisit these two subjects again. Do you have an early season mock? Do you agree with the rookie grades? Post a mock if you have one or feel free to comment on these selections. Reply with your grading scale of the rookies.

BBQ will return next week with more questions and evaluations of the Dallas game. Until then…
