2nd Rd - QB or not QB?

That, is now the question.

With the Bills, Bengals, and Cardinals set to pick ahead of us, and all possibly looking at QB, if we want Mallet, or Dalton, etc... we have to pull the trigger here.

So, we swap 2's with New England.

Our #41 & #49 = 900pts.
Their #33 & 60 = 880pts.

Not saying it's what we should do. Only that if we covet one of these guys, you can't risk hoping they'll be there at #41.

Just a thought.

I would rather wait it out and see if a QB is there when we pick. If so, we consider. But i don't like the idea of trading up, personally.

I'm okay with trading up a few slots if 1) they seriously love the guy they target, 2) they don't give away the store to get him, and 3) they don't have a different plan in mind--say either going with someone already on the roster for another year if they DON'T seriously love any rooks this year or targeting a different free agent once the bell rings on Monday.

In other words ... no way to make an informed call on QB or not QB in the 2nd round just yet. :)

I'm in a position somewhat similar to yours, Om. What I'd like to see them do versus what they're likely to do-which, as evidenced by the Kerrigan pick can be unpredictable. Honestly can anyone really say they saw that one coming? After reflection, however, it looks like a completely defensible choice.

Do I want us to take a QB in round two? Do I think we will? Well, that's difficult to say-Dalton, Kapernick, Mallet, McElroy and few others are still around and we're sitting on two second round picks so who knows? I guess the question, to me at least, do I trust Allen/Shanahan enough to have confidence that they may see something in a player that neither I nor the fans nor media hype has brought out.

Judging by the Kerrigan pick and its nod toward "solid" instead of "spectacular"-which IMO is what you need for a serious re-build-I'd have to say I do.

So, long story short, I won't be either surprised nor upset if we pick a QB or if we don't. I'd be surprised, however if by chance one of the above QBs manages to drop down to the fifth round or so if we didn't pull the trigger and thusly give a lot of fans instant coronaries.

I wouldn't get one though-almost nothing surprises me anyway. Uncertainty is the rule of the universe.

Well, I changed my mind.

Proclamation

Let it be now known, to all men, Prince and Pauper, Noble or Peasant, that this day of April the 29th, in the year of our Lord Two Thousand and Eleven, I hath proclaimed, after having so gazed unto the days of our morrow, and seen, that the franchise QB that has so eluded this Kingdom, does surely reside in the person of Ryan Mallet. I further decree, that all the powers I possess, I bequeath upon him, that he may fulfill his destiny, as the next Redskins QB to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. And I pray that all good men shall do the same.

So, let it be written. So, let it be done.

I agree. We aren't talking cream of the crop here. And, let's be honest, we'll probably be drafting in the upper part of the round next draft. puts us back a year...but maybe we get an NFL ready guy at that time (trade the farm for Luck?). in the event, I would se such a move as a departure from what many of us think is a return to sanity (finally): methodically rebuilding the franchise with youth and talent at the key foundation positions. this is the thing I am not yet certain of.....is this where Shanahan/Allen are headed or will they stray from the reservation and slip back into "we can win now" mode? also, can we count on Snyder staying out of it for another season or so as the team rebuilds itself?

you forgot the part where he parties down with you like it's 2099!!!

I just want us to keep filling holes, which to me means BPA or trade down. Obviously we need a QB but I'd rather not trade up.

Again though, I know nothing about the actual players in the draft so my opinion is fairly worthless. :)

We still need a center, RG and RT. I'd rather go that way

The thing is, we're still sitting on enough picks to do exactly that-in addition to snagging a QB. There's still the problem of holes left and one thing I see looming is a "hot prospect" having fallen far enough in the draft to be a serious temptation-a "bargain", if you will.

Do I have one in mind? Yup.

Randall Cobb.

We need a WR, Cobb's still available, although for how long is anybody's guess. It wouldn't surprise me to see somebody (other than us that is) trade up to grab this guy-he's considered a "plum" by a lot of analysts and just so happens to have been a victim of the QB feeding frenzy in the first round and with Julio Jones vanishing so early that just pushed Cobb's stock upward.

If he were to somehow to fall to #41 it wouldn't bother me at all to grab him but a trade-up might endanger positions like the ones Sarge mentioned-foundational type stuff.

I agree with Sarge on this but my feelings are torn.

On the one hand, when we traded down we showed we were not in love with any of the QBs available at the #10 spot. So, we traded down 6 spots and picked up another #2 pick. That was smart.

The Jags wanted Gabbert and apparently we didn't. Then, Ponder went to the Vikings at #12. I assume Shanahan believed Ponder would be gone by the time the #16 pick rolled around. Therefore, I don't think he was in love with Ponder at #16 either.

So, who is left? Dalton and Kaepernick are listed as the "best of the rest". That leaves 2 questions to answer on whether we take s QB in the 2nd round:
#1 - Will either be there when we pick at #41 or #49?
#2 - Is either higher on our list of needs and/or worthy of the #41 or #49 pick?

Both questions assume we will neither trade up or down to select them. That is because the decision to trade up or down is predicated on what the other teams do. So, I just answered question #1 by saying I don't know. Great, #1 down and #2 to go.

We are right back to all the pre-Draft blah blah blah of do we/will we/should we pick a QB. I think Shanahan is not going to reach for anyone. I don't think he will trade up for anyone this draft. Next year maybe; this year no.

By trading down he got the player he wanted that fit his most pressing need and another pick to find a starter to fix the next most pressing need. Since that is what he did, that is what I expect him to do again.

If one of these guys is available at #41 or #49 and he feels they are worthy then he will take them. It all depends on how high up the list of needs he has QB. I think we need a NT next and an interior O-lineman more than a QB right now. A starter at both of these positions can be found in the 2nd round. I don't see any QB taken in the 2nd round as an immediate starter and I think we need starters more than anything.

So, if I am wrong and he feels a QB is more pressing than a NT and interior 0-lineman then he will take a QB with either the #41 or #49 pick. If he agrees with me that the O and D lines are more important then you won't see a QB taken by this team in the 2nd round.

We went defense in the first round and it is only one piece in the puzzle by picking Kerrigan to go opposite Rak. The other major piece of rebuilding the defense is still out there and can likely be had at #41. Granted we have more needs, like CB and ILB on D and RT and RG on the O-line, but there are 2 potential NT's out there, Marvin Austin from NC and Stephen Paea from Oregon State. Remember, the key to the 3-4 is the anchor, the NT.

I read up on Austin last night, he was part of the issue that NC had last year when they suspended a bunch of players. He sat out the 2010 season. If Kerrigan and his character are a message as has been suggested, this would not be a wise pick. Paea, on the other hand, is a character guy. Neither guy will make it much further down the board than the #41 pick, so I don't think either is an option at #49. There is one concern with both of these young men besides good or bad character, neither of them breaks the 310 mark. Not exactly the size you want from your NT. Paea has his strength to compensate, and Austin is apparently one heck of an athlete.

Either way, I had been a strong proponent of O-line with both 1st and 2nd round picks. As we approached the draft, I resigned myself to the idea that defense is more of a priority, I mean we were 31st in the league. Paea and Kerrigan alone could make us a better D. I was hoping for Watts in the 1st round, but accept Kerrigan.

I like Andy Dalton! I think he would look good in B&G. However, I think he is 60/40 to be a successful QB in the NFL. Too much risk when we have so many other needs. McElroy can be there in the 5th round. I would rather take that risk so our defense can get the immediate impact of young play makers.

#49? Wisniewski or Hudson. Both are versatile players who can play C or G.

what if...and this is a BIIIIIIIIIIIIG what if...

we decide to give McNabb another try and thats why he is still around and therefore we can use these picks to get offensive linemen?

outstanding question! I wondered about that as well. the only feedback I can provide is that it appears McNabb has checked out completely. He's not in the press, not attending these informal player get togethers, not speaking as a team leader.....he has evaporated for all intents and purposes.

Donuts to dollars the FO has had an informal deal in place for a long time - the CBA stuff has gotten in the way of pulling it off.....but that should change soon. I hope we get a 3rd next year in whatever deal materializes.

I don't know about the QB personally but I think if it were me, I would be taking Paea at #41 if he is there. If he is gone, I might jump on a QB but only if he were gone. Obviously what happens at #49 depends completely on who we got at #41.

I would not be packaging anything to move up in the round though.

That would be my plan if I were in charge.

I would have no problem with cranking up old #5 for another year ... with Grossman and/or Beck as No. 2 ... AND drafting a QB in round 2 if the Shanahan's think The Right Guy is there.

I'm old school when it comes to QB's....for every Marino or Ryan who hit the field and have success from day one, there are a couple dozen wide-eyed hot-shot rookie QB's who get their asses handed to them and their team suffers for it.

Bring 'em along slowly. And you can afford to DO that if

1) you have a veteran option to hold the fort for a season or two while the rookie learns, and

2) you haven't spent a gazillion dollars in guaranteed money on a high 1st rounder who economics says you pretty much have to play right away. This year's perfect example is the Panthers and Cam Newton.

I think McNabb was pulled because he didn't learn and/or run the offense the way Mike and Kyle wanted. If another offseason (assuming he's actually been in the books) of familiarity with the system and a meeting of the minds can happen, I still think #5 could give this team a solid if unspectacular year or two while they continue to look for/groom The Next.

Which is pretty much where we were at the beginning of last season ...

My thinking...

If Paea is there at 41, we are taking him.

I'm still convinced that we will take a QB in round two. If Kaepernick is there at 49, I think we are going to take him. Ryan Mallet is plan B at this position. If both are gone by then, we could go for Greg McElroy in round five.

I truly believe that DMc5 is gone. He will never, ever play on a Shanahan team again. If Cincy doesn't pick a QB in this draft and Palmer makes good on his threat, we could see a trade - DMc5 and a 2012 second rounder for Carson Palmer. This is based only on if we are not able to draft a QB today or tomorrow. If we are able to draft a QB and Palmer makes good on his threat to retire, then we could trade No.5 for a 2012 third or fourth rounder.

Don't count out the 49ers getting No.5 either.

Jmho and $0.02 (if it is worth that much).

Well, this settles it. McNabb is coming back.

Vikes pick of Christian Ponder at 12th overall won't take them out of the veteran QB market. Donovan McNabb remains strong favorite there
