ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall says he knows what his team needs to do to win: have him cover each opponent's top receiver.

Hall says Monday it doesn't matter what Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett thinks because, Hall says, "This is my team; this is my defense."

Washington allowed Houston's Matt Schaub to throw for 497 yards and three touchdowns in the Texans' 30-27 overtime victory Sunday.

That included a game-tying, 34-yard scoring pass to Andre Johnson on fourth-and-10 with 2:03 left in regulation. Cornerback Phillip Buchanon and safety Reed Doughty were in coverage; Hall was lined up on the other side of the field.

"Won't happen like that again," Hall says. "If Andre Johnson's out there, I'm going to be out there."
We are efforting verification on Jim Haslett's supposed response when asked about Hall's comments:

"Man needs to shut the (*&#$%! up."

Gotta love the confidence. Not crazy about throwing your teammates under the bus, but whatever.

I don't think Hall makes that stop either. In fact, I'm not thinking Darrell Green, Deion Sanders, Champ Bailey, Michael Haynes, or a host of other HoF cornerbacks make that stop.

DeAngelo would have probably made a more successful attempt-but as has been said elsewhere, single coverage on AJ is gonna be nearly impossible-unless your name is Darrelle Revis, and maybe not even then

I doubt that it would have mattered. Schaub was throwing that ball to Johnson if he was open or not. He was looking his way the whole play (if I remember correctly). Getting the ball to the best player on the field is never a bad plan. He made a play, simple as that.

so why not just concede the play and just give the Texans the score? why risk injury?

maybe. then again..it is a team sport. perhaps a defense with a pass rush worth a damn gives the QB one less second to decide and execute; or press at the LOS with handoff to soft & off zone creates timing problems...or any number of other possibilities. prevent may seem logical at the end of the game...but it obviously didn't work.

probably true. on the other hand...who is more responsible for this awful defense: Haslett as defensive coordinator or Allen as provider of personnel?
Why limit my choices? I'd add at least one more option...Vinny Cerrato.

Of course, injuries don't help. Reports were Kareem Moore was one of the "starts of training camp" and had grabbed the FS job by the scruff of the neck. If he's playing, maybe the game never comes down to a playground-scramble 4th and 10 heave into the endzone. Or it does maybe he elevates another 3 inches higher than Doughty on that play and AJ can't hold on.

If the Redskins are 2-0 today, having made any ONE of about a dozen plays that would have sealed the game yesterday, we're not worried about Haslett or Allen or even Cerrato. We're talking about playoff seeding.

I don't think it is fair to blame either Allen or Haslett for the poor defense just yet. We knew there would be growing pains with the switch in scheme. Haslett does not have the correct personnel and Allen cannot over turn the whole roster in one offseason.

Also, I do not think we can blame Cerrato for the poor defensive personnel either. He drafted for a 4-3 and we have had a good defense until the switch this year. Should he have gotten us a FS? Yes, but there are always going to be holes to fill. If we were running a 4-3, I bet we would be playing pretty well and more agressively then the past couple of years.

I think everyone gets a mulligan this year. Next year, all bets are off and swing away!

maybe. it appears a lot more work remains to be done with the o-line and receiving corps. so...while we are giving away draft picks...where are the reinforcements supposed to come from?

I do not see the problem with trading draft picks for solid personnel. Draft picks are a hit and miss anyways. I would definitely take a Jamaal Brown or Donovan McNabb for the picks they gave up. You will miss on drafting just the same as you will miss on trading for a veteran.

McNabb is worth the two picks and Brown is definitely worth the 4th or 3rd rounder that we are going to give up for him.

Yes, there is a lot of work to be done with the offensive side of the ball. It will take time to fix. Allen has his hands full that is for sure. He was not left with a lot to work with on the offensive side of the ball to begin with and the change in defensive scheme has made it even more difficult.

Also, I said swing away next year. I actually would like to give them three years to see solid improvement. I really do not think two years is enough time to get done what they are trying to achieve.

Had they even been just average at running the ball the game is never in question. The best way to avoid that type of play is to not be in that position. There are just too many broken pieces to think it will all be fixed in one year. If you have a vision of what you want this team to be, you get about making it that way. It can't be done in some phased fashion. Take the hit now and get it done. Each week will hightlight one deficiency or another.

What would you want Hall to say? I don't want to be on the number one receiver? I think he has a valid point, why is whats arguably our number one corner not on their best receiver?

From Ryan O'Halloran, formerly of the Washington Times:

"Unofficial, but ... Andre Johnson vs. DeAngelo Hall yesterday--21 snaps. No catches for AJ80, only 103 yards offense by Hou on those plays."

He also notes that it's hard to tell if the Redskins were in man or zone from time to time.

That sounds great, but we don't know if they were double covering, or sliding a safety over on top, or what else was going on. Having said that, if we were doing those things when Hall was covering AJ, but not when Doughty was...

I'm finding it tough to pick on the receivers right now after watching Donovan put up 426 yards through the air while using 8 different guys. Granted, Moss had 10 catches while everyone else had 4 or less but McNabb did connect on a pair of 62 yard completions, neither of which went to Moss and just missed on another long one to Galloway. With a real QB (hurts to say that, it really does, after support Jason so long), this receiving corps is doing well. Not that I don't think they could be better but I'm not sure it is the priority now we all thought it was 6 months ago.

It really depends on how you view things. Shanahan is not playing for 3 years down the road, he is playing for now. If you are playing for now and dealing your future draft picks for now, it is reasonable to be judged on the now.

On the other hand, if you are building for the future, you don't build like Allen and Shanahan are building. You save picks. Hell, you deal established players for more picks more often than not. In that sort of instance, you judge on the product after 2 or 3 years.

You seem to want the best of both worlds...deal for solid players now and judge in 2 or 3 years.

Sorry but in 2 or 3 years, it is possible McNabb or Brown or both will be watching games from their easy chair on Sundays. I'm not saying I think that will happen but both have some injury history with a significant number of games missed in the careers. If that were the case, I think we would hear more than just some muttering about "lost picks" unless there is some real improvement in the team right here, right now.

Of course I want the best of both worlds, who doesn't? I do not think any older coach that takes over a new team would have the patience to build through the draft, nor do I think that the fan base has the patience at this time.

I think that I have stated on this site that I do not have high hopes for the Allen/Shannahan combo when it comes to personnel decisions. I hope I am wrong. I am trying to stay optimistic and have no doubt that we will be competitive. I was really hoping that they would bring in another personnel guy, but that did not happen.

We have traded three picks for two players that will hopefully be here for four + years. That is a gamble that they took on two positions that are really important. How many non-first round draft picks stay on the team for four years? Its not like the TJ Duckett trade. When you trade for players of this calliber and with minimal compensation, I think it is a good deal as long as it is not a one year rental (Jason Taylor).

These two trades make us competitive now and there are a million different senarios between this year and next year that could play out. If we would have kept JC, we would have lost a majority of the fan base due to aneurysms. There were not any better options for a starting caliber QB. We could have made a move for Bradford, and who is to say we did not try.

At the end of the day, I believe Allen and Shannahan have a plan. I like to see what that plan is before passing judgement, I think that is fair. I really do not think we will have a great sense of direction until next year at the earliest.
