I had a coworker in my section a while back who is full blood Navajo. Bet you can't guess what his favorite team is, lol. He said the majority of the reservation could care less about the team name but there are a few who do.

I don't know anything about this mayor but he kinda sounds like he enjoys his name in the papers, regardless of reason. Is he an attention whore or am i wrong there?

I've been studying this topic a lot lately, and regardless of what the name originally meant, I bet it's changed within five years. Society seems to be more sensitive than ever, and it's also a way for the team to generate more money.

Mayor Gray...

Please change the oil in your hair.

Sincerely, Nick

This specific silly ultimatum won't do it, but I agree that the change seems inevitable at this point.

CT, that article is eleven years old. I know the numbers. I'm a Redskin fan. :)

In the end I don't think that's going to matter.

I think I would be okay with a name change, but I would like to see the much-more offensive cartoon Indian go in Cleveland before we change our name. Seems like they don't get nearly the amount of uproar that we do; when their mascot seems like it would be equally as offensive (much moreso if you ask me).

To be fair, we make (rough guesstimate here) about 500x more money than the Cleveland Indians do, partially because of the exposure we get since football is (rough guesstimate here) about 500x more popular than baseball is.

But I agree with the offensiveness of their mascot.

It's 11 years old Henry but the numbers haven't really changed and the points made within are still as relevant now as they were then. It aint happening, not in the next 5 years anyway.

why should we change our names?

Because the team is winning again. Before this year the only draw the Redskins had was their glorious past and grand traditions. I just heard today that the Hoggettes are hanging it up this year. I don't think it's just coincidence that that decision was made after our first division championship in 14 years.

If Griffin ushers in a new era, I think that coupled with societal pressure will be enough to convince Snyder the time to make the change has come.

Personally, I am and always have been fairly neutral on the subject (surprise surprise :) ). I love our traditions, but I also understand that if it bothers enough people at the end of the day it's just a sports team. I'll root for them either way. I know some of you consider that sacrilege ... sorry. I also think it's just a matter of time at this point so I've sort of resigned myself to that.

So because roughly a dozen or so people have voiced their offense at it, we should cater to them? You know what I say? **** them. One of the stupidest things this country has been doing in recent years is dumbing down things to appease people, getting rid of anything that could be interpreted as offensive by anybody whether it has actually caused a stir or not, etc. It's ridiculous. These people are trying to turn this country into what it is on Demolition Man. Seriously, people need to just stop already. We will never be holding hands and skipping through the meadows.

Only after the Indians, Chiefs, Braves, Warriors, and Blackhawks do. That is just off the top of my head, and in pro sports. Not to mention I'm sure some peta finds all animal names to be offensive, so we should just change all team names to colors, wait that would be racial.... ****ing stupid is what it is, welcome to the the United States of the Offended.

Mayor Gray would seem to have other issues to attend to at the moment like explaining what his campaign workers allegedly did to get him elected.

Being a pretty anti-PC guy, I oppose the name change on those grounds alone. This world needs to get over it and move on.

Lets change it to 'scalping red savages'.

Hail to the scalping red savages, hail victory, scalp us some cowboys, scalps for all DC!

I'm all about embracing change.

I am Metis, from a family that has been very active in Native politics, I have been a skins fan since I was about 8 years old. I think the people who yap about this are the same ones who yap about everything being "racist" they can piss off.

the other people who can piss off are the ones who whine about Natives living on tax free land or owning Casinos, because 1- most indians pay taxes, I can guarantee ive paid more in taxes than most white americans. and 2-its tough to take someone seriously who bitches that Indians are allowed to have casinos WHEN THEIR ENTIRE COUNTRY WAS STOLEN FROM THEM.
