13 Year Old Thoughts

Rate this Entry
Do you remember the first time you saw Animal House? I remember my first time. I was 13, staying over at a friend's house. His parents must have rented it or something, and were in another room, or out of the house, or whatever. Anyway, not totally appropriate for a 13 year old, even then.

I have grown to love Animal House since then, but was not all that enamoured with it when I first watched. Just didn't get the humor I guess. Really a waste of two hours of my life, except for one scene. Care to guess which scene in Animal House would have appealed to a 13 year old boy?

Yeah, sure. The peeping tom scene with John Belushi. I mean... wow. To a 13 year old? Wow. Just... wow. Made my week. Month, maybe. LOVED that scene. Had a huge grin on my face for a week. Maybe that's why I love movies so much? Nah, must be something else... :)

That's kind of how I feel about the Rams game. Ugh. Between the "Defense", "Special"
Teams and the Refs... ugh. I want that 3-4.5 hours of my life back. We have (and will continue, I'm sure) to discuss the lack of defensive adjustments, the special teams breakdown and the horrible atrocity that was the refereeing. I won't go into much detail here, excepting this one side note:

Goodell needs to get the refs thing fixed. NOW. Two things are going to happen that are going to cause the NFL some serious fan revolts. One, someone famous, a star, is going to get injured. Thank God it didn't happen, but can you imagine if Griff had been injured yesterday because of a late hit or something like that? DC would have exploded, much of VA with it. Second, what happens when fantasy games are impacted negatively by these incompetent refs? Remember the fuss that was kicked up a few years back when Brian Westbrook knelt at the one yard line guaranteeing the Eagles a win instead of taking it in for the score? Yikes. No imagine how angry the millions upon millions of people who play fantasy are going to be when these jackasses cost someone points, a game, the playoffs, whatever. Goodell needs to fix it this week. Stop messing around, Roger.

Anyway, despite all of that happening, I still came away with a huge grin on my face last night. Not because I saw boobs this time (though the case could be made for Haslett/Smith/Refs), but because I saw our future.

Robert Griffin III

This kid is good. Ridiculously good. I was fortunate to be able to see Michael Vick play in college 4 timee: twice at VT, once at JMU crushing my Dukes, and once at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans against FSU. Dude was unreal. Clearly faster than anyone on the field, more athletic, etc. But the throws he made sometimes were just... off. Head scratchers. Griff has the athleticism of Vick, with the precision of McNair. I'm telling you now, Griffin is going to be better than Steve Young.

And he is on our team!

Folks, the days of us wondering if this is the year we might sneak into the playoffs and make a little noise are OVER. Sure, we might not make the playoffs this year (though my money still says we do). But in a couple of years, we will be arguing in the preseason about whether we win 10, 11, or 12 games every year. This kid is that good.

And you know what? Maybe, over time, we will learn to love this game like I love Animal House now. The Chicago Bulls were beaten up physically in the late 80's by the Pistons, until they learned how to give as good as they got. Once they learned how to give it right back to Detroit, the Bulls won 6 of 8 titles.

Maybe this is the first learning exercise this team needs to learn to be great.

I absolutely, completely and in all other ways endorse this entry. I came away from that game with exactly the same thought.

The loss sucks, but we have a quarterback.

Well said and I agree-in spite of everything that was wrong in that game, we have us a QB who could wind up being astonishingly good.

I'm digging this post except for the idea of sneaking into the playoffs. That took a huge hit yesterday with the news about Rak and Carriker.

That kid playing QB looks better all the time.
