Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you had a good week. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become part of the family.

OTAs, mini-camp, rookie camp, and the draft have passed into the history books. Training camp will be here in just under two weeks. We’ll continue to cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations and today we will take a look at the inside linebackers. Feel free to scroll back in this off-season blog and see what we have said about free agency, the draft, and take a look at what your fellow Redskins fans think of the team transactions over the last several months. BBQ will continue to take a look at each position and provide analysis over the next few weeks. Feel free to offer your own analysis as we go along.

      - Days until Training Camp: 13
      - Days until the first preseason game: 27
      - Days until the Regular Season Opener (Eagles): 58
      - Days until the Cowboys game: 65
      - Days until the Giants game: 86

      Let’s get right to it!

      Inside Linebackers:

      Jon Bostic
Jon Bostic is a seasoned veteran, but he is still young and effective at age 28. If he can prove to be a solid addition this season, Bostic could be extended another year or two. We don’t list him as the best ILB currently on the roster, but we list him first because he is essentially the player who replaces Reuben Foster (on IR) in 2019. Foster is undeniably the best ILB for the Redskins when healthy. Look for Bostic to have a respectable season.

      Josh Harvey-Clemons
Rating him this high? Absolutely! Harvey-Clemons had a good mini camp and a solid set of OTAs. Look for him to take the next steps and become a very good ILB. The Louisville product has bulked up to 245 lbs. on his 6-4 frame and this former defensive back’s athleticism could pay huge dividends for the Redskins in 2019.

      Mason Foster
The “Rodney Dangerfield” of the Redskins looks to continue his role of being a good presence in the rushing defense, but he is still something of a liability in coverage. Foster will probably receive fewer snaps this season, but don’t discount his tackling skills at opportune times. By playing a little less, Foster could be a fresh set of legs as needed in the later stages of a contest. He has something of a knack for the ball and he could record several fumbles and an interception or two.

      Shaun Dion Hamilton
Shaun Dion Hamilton was thought to be a late first round to mid second round talent at the inside linebacker position – that is until an injury late in the 2017 season at Alabama dropped his stock. The Redskins were able to add him in the sixth round last year and that move has begun to pay off. Hamilton became a solid presence in the latter half of the 2018 season – just as BBQ had predicted in the evals last summer. Look for the Crimson Tide product to become a regular in the lineup this season and have a very good season. Is the Pro Bowl a possibility?

      Cole Holcomb
Holcomb is a rookie who is facing a logjam at ILB, but he could emerge as a very good role player. This North Carolina Tar Heel was considered to be a third or fourth round talent in the recent draft, but the Redskins got another steal after adding him late in the fifth round. Look for Holcomb to come in the game on passing downs as he replaces Mason Foster. Foster could find himself on primarily on the bench later in the season as Holcomb gains more experience. He is too talented to keep off the field.

      Others
B.J. Blunt is an underrated prospect from McNeese St. in Louisiana and is a good candidate for the practice squad. If he can show some consistency, the 2019 UDFA could find a spot on the roster in the next two or three years.

There is our latest look at roster position evaluations for this off-season. We will feature another position early next week.
