    • Guest Mock Draft: Dr. Dana Sparkman

Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mocks, Camps, OTAs, Roster Predictions, 2019

Greetings from BBQ to everyone in BGO land and guests from social media – we hope you become a member here.

Today, we bring you the latest guest mock of the off-season and it comes from a Redskins fan who knows her football – Dr. Dana Sparkman from deep in the Heart of Dixie. She calls central Alabama her home and has been a Redskins fan for many years. Dr. Sparkman is smarter than all of us combined! Ok, maybe not, but she completed undergraduate studies at the University of North Alabama, then moved north to Syracuse, NY where she obtained a graduate degree from Syracuse University – Dr. Sparkman has a soft spot in her heart for the Orange basketball team. After returning home to Alabama, this southern belle went on to earn her doctorate from the University of Alabama. You see where this is going, right? Yes, Dr. Sparkman is very knowledgeable about her beloved Crimson Tide and is excited about the number of players from Alabama on the Redskins roster.

Even though she is a respected college professor, Dr. Sparkman is an avid Redskins fan who prefers that you call her Dana. BBQ offered to help her a bit with the mock, but she came armed with excellent knowledge on many of the prospects and handled it all like a seasoned pro. She also provided something extra after the seventh and final selection.

BBQ will continue the guest mocks each week until early April and we will feature a Redskins fan/mock specialist. It became a popular feature last year and we are happy to bring it back to BGO.

In this mock from Dana, she looks to the SEC for several prospects, but it wasn’t as Alabama-centric as you may think. I enjoyed learning about her mock and I hope you will enjoy it as well. Oh, and don’t utter a word to her about Clemson!

Be sure to follow her on twitter at:

Without any further delays, let’s take a look at Dana’s mock and extra surprise.

      Dana’s Seven Round Mock:

Round 1 – Jonah Williams, OT, Alabama
Dana knows Alabama players like the back of her hand and going with a stud offensive lineman from the Crimson Tide is a good thing. He could step in at right tackle from day one.

      Round 2 – Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, SS, Florida
If Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix returns, the Redskins could have two starting safeties with hyphenated last names. I like her thinking here. Anyway, this is a very good choice in round two. Over the weekend, BBQ has added him as a player to watch in round two, so look for it in the mock on Friday.

Round 3 – Riley Ridley, WR, Georgia
Dana selects the talented receiver from archrival Georgia. You know this had to be a difficult choice, but it is a solid one and Ridley would provide good value here.

Round 3 (Comp Pick) – D’Andre Walker, OLB, Georgia
Staying with athletes in the SEC, Dana selects the heralded edge rusher from Georgia. Are you surprised? Wow! Two Bulldogs in a row! Walker could go earlier in the draft, but if he is still available at his juncture, the Redskins should be running to the podium.

Round 5 – Brett Rypien, QB, Boise St.
Showing good restraint by not chasing a quarterback too early, Dana chooses the signal caller from Boise. Will he last this long? Dana thinks so and who are we to argue?

Round 5 (Comp Pick) – Corbin Kaufusi, DE, Brigham Young.
This was the only pick that I helped her with when discussing the choice. In all fairness, she forgot about the comp pick in this round, but you can scroll back and read what I have written about Kaufusi.

Round 6 (Comp Pick) – Foster Moreau, TE, Louisiana St.
Returning to the SEC, Dana takes a flyer on the tall, bulky, and talented tight end from the Cajun County Bayou Bengals.

Round 7 – Elijah Holyfield, RB, Georgia
Can you believe it??? A third player from Georgia??? I know for a fact that Dana will never trade in her fandom of Alabama football, but she is picking the best players possible for the Redskins – you’ve got to give her credit for making these choices. I have Holyfield rated as a fourth rounder, but you never know when an athlete could get selected lower than expected – just as she is thinking here.

      The Extra Surprise
UDFA: Nick Fitzgerald, QB, Mississippi St.
Dana wanted to mock one UDFA for the Redskins and added a second quarterback. The position has a bunch of question marks this off-season and adding a second signal caller is not a bad idea.

      BBQ’s Thoughts:
Thanks to Dana for all of her research and a superb mock. If these three Georgia players are selected by the Redskins, she should be a permanent guest mocker each year. Heck, maybe another guest appearance next month? What say you members of BGO? Dana put a lot of thought and work to this mock – thank you, Dr. Sparkman. Feel free to comment on any aspect of what she mocked to the Redskins.

BBQ will have a free agency update tomorrow and a mock draft on Friday.

Again, be sure to follow Dana on twitter at:
