Burner’s Burning Questions: Free Agency, Mock Drafts, Camps, Roster Predictions, 2018

Greetings from BBQ to everyone here at BGO. We hope you had a good and pleasant holiday weekend. Hello to everyone on social media. We’d love to have you as a member here and become a part of the family.

Free Agency has all but dwindled down for now. OTAs and mini-camps are ongoing. Training camp will be here soon. We’ll cover it all and give everyone at BGO the best coverage possible.

BBQ continues our off-season evaluations. We will examine the various positions and give an assessment. Today we feature the guards/center and later this week it will be the tackles. We’ll post an evaluation of each group for the next few weeks.

      Let’s get right to it!

      Left Guard:
      Shawn Lauvao
The new left guard is the same as the old left guard. Shawn Lauvao is the starter for now, but he could be challenged by a group of average guards. He is good in the running game, but struggles in pass protection.

Lauvao is the starter until proven otherwise. His injury history is something to consider and the Redskins need to have the backups ready.

      Right Guard:
      Brandon Scherff
Scherff is the undisputed starter and one of the best guards in the league. Look for Scherff to get a new contract next off-season. His play has been nothing but stellar from day one.

Nothing can displace Scherff at right guard other than an injury. He should be able to score a third contract from the Redskins in another few years.

      Tyler Catalina
Catalina has the size and bulk to play either guard position, but lacks the overall experience. For now, he is the backup swing guard and he could be pressed into service much sooner than expected.

Catalina needs to take several steps forward this off-season. There is a reasonable chance he will be needed at left guard, especially if Shawn Lauvao goes down with an injury – a possibility that is very realistic.

      Kyle Kalis
Kyle Kalis needs to prove he belongs. He is a backup now and due to lack of depth, he is likely assured place on the final roster of fifty-three. Or is he? Kalis needs to add about fifteen pounds of bulk.

      Other Guards
The Redskins have only one other guard in addition to the ones already mentioned. Could another free agent guard be added before or during training camp? BBQ thinks this is a real possibility.

Isaiah Williams was signed recently, but he is not a candidate for the roster or practice squad.

      Chase Roullier
Roullier proved that he is up to the task in his rookie season and will be the starter in 2018. He had a quick learning curve and was able to gain the confidence of coaches and players along the offensive line.

Roullier proved that he could call out blocking assignments at the line of scrimmage and play effectively. Roullier should be able to establish a good rapport with Alex Smith.

      Tony Bergstrom
Early in the off-season, Bergstrom was listed as a guard and in recent weeks he was listed as a center. The Redskins lost last year’s original starting center to free agency and there was a need for experience at the center position.

Bergstrom provides that veteran presence and stability as a quality backup.

      Other Centers
Demetrius Rhaney is a second year center who will likely be cut before the season and he is not eligible for the practice squad.

UDFA Casey Dunn will not be on the roster of fifty-three, but he does have long term potential. Look for him to be on the practice squad in 2018 and have a reasonable chance to make the roster in 2019.

There is our latest look at roster positions this off-season. Later this week we will look at the tackles.

      Have a great week.

      Hail To The Redskins!
