    Too Late

    “It ain’t too late!”

It was a clear, bright Saturday morning, and like the wails of a religious zealot entreating the doomed masses the words rang out across the parking lot, somewhere between Academy Sports and Home Depot. I was on foot, waiting to cross an access road there in the lot, and I had to look around – first to figure out who was being spoken to, and then to figure out who had done the speaking.

Not the easiest task as I’m not always the sharpest knife ...

The Redskins Are A Drug, And I'm Not Ready To Quit

Back in early February, I found myself sitting on a friend's couch, cold beer in one hand, small paper plate of chicken wings in the other. I was joined by about 10 or 12 other similarly armed friends, all of us circling around the giant big screen TV, staring with anxious anticipation as we awaited the kickoff to Super Bowl 43.

As I watched what would be the last opening kickoff for the next 7 long months, a less-than-hardcore fan of the sport sitting next to me innocently asked ...

    Philthy

I must be mad. Out of touch. An anachronism. Hell – I’m certain of it.

I don’t believe Michael Vick was wrong. I don’t believe he was ‘misguided’. He wasn’t mislead by his ‘cultural upbringing’. Michael Vick wasn’t immature or confused. He didn’t use ‘bad judgment’, or make some ‘bad decisions’.

    Michael Vick was evil.

Yep. The ‘E’ word. You know what evil is, right? Raping a woman? Evil. Bludgeoning someone weaker than you and taking something from ...

    Blognostications

It’s the fool’s season. Time to make a wish, throw a dart, say a prayer, make a human sacrifice, consult the Gods.

It’s the start of the 2009 NFL season and it’s prediction time.

And certainly, this fool is going to make a prediction. But not before a thoughtful, cerebral, academic pause. Because, really, who the hell do I think I am? What precise, educated, and informed knowledge leads me to a conclusion others should pay more than a passing attention to? Yes – ...

    Sunday's Smell - Redux

Almost exactly one year ago, I wrote a BGO.C.D. blog entry called 'Sunday’s Smell'. Part reminiscence of all those Sunday mornings filled with anticipation for a great Redskins game to come, part bitter recognition that in 2009 excitement and hope were going to be hard to muster, it was not an optimistic piece.

A year has passed. The clock ticks inexorably towards an epic season-opening home clash with our most hated rivals (do I need to say their name?) on national TV. And I can ...

    Inconsistently Inconsistent

For years now, the Redskins have reminded me of my golf game. On any given day, I could go from tee to green in regulation but then 3 or 4 putt. If I was nailing my putts in a single stroke, I played tee to green like old people drive…slow and all over the place.

Fact is, if I could have played both long and short game well on the same day, consistently, I could have turned pro.

It was so frustrating to me that I have long since sworn off the game, sold my clubs and ...

    Zone Blocking: A Simplified Version

Zone blocking rules allow linemen to use the movement and attack angles of the defenders against them.

Benefits of a zone blocking scheme:
-Two reads for the linemen. Covered or uncovered. Simple.
-Seek positioning where you have leverage, not where you are looking to overpower a defender.

Rule: In inside zone, the linemen operate on a system that moves to the play side, not toward the hole called

Explained: It doesn’t matter what hole the ...

    A Defining Season

I’ve decided I’d like to "occasionally" blog the Washington Capitals - Welcome to ‘Red All Over,’ the Washington Capitals as Lanky sees them. Enjoy!
    ***

The Washington Capitals enter the 2011-2012 season with perhaps the most pressure a D.C. team has ever felt to bring home a championship. The past three years have had the same theme - dominating regular season performances, followed by lackluster playoff performances and early exits. The Caps have not made it past ...

  9. 2011 - Week 6 - Philadelphia Eagles

    Blognosticator - McD5

Welcome fans. Our Redskins sit at 3-1, in first place in the division, and are well-rested after a bye week. Considering how we finished last season, I believe most of us would be pretty happy—and we should be. Our draft went well, our team is much more competitive and the atmosphere around the team is greatly improved. And even more, other teams in our division are struggling.

We face one of those struggling teams this weekend, as the previously ...

    Carpe Dre-am

Uttering the descriptor ‘must win’ to describe an NFL game before the frost is even on the pumpkin just seems inherently wrong.

Nevertheless, Sunday’s game against the 1-4 Philadelphia Eagles is a ‘must win’.

Sure…the Eagles, hapless to date despite a bevy full of hired gun talent, are desperate to save their season. The Iggles done gone Redskins on us, and so far it ain’t working out so well. The list of teams who’ve made the playoffs from their current basement-dwelling ...
