    Zone Blocking: A Simplified Version

Zone blocking rules allow linemen to use the movement and attack angles of the defenders against them.

Benefits of a zone blocking scheme:
-Two reads for the linemen. Covered or uncovered. Simple.
-Seek positioning where you have leverage, not where you are looking to overpower a defender.

Rule: In inside zone, the linemen operate on a system that moves to the play side, not toward the hole called

Explained: It doesn’t matter what hole the ...

  2. Lord of the Buys

Get it? Come on. I have an English degree (and Art History). I get to use it once a year, if that.

Lord of the Flies is a classic novel by William Goldman about a group of boys who try to govern themselves on a deserted island.

Fabulous commentary on our evolutionary history, nature vs. nurture...

Delving Into a Numbers Game: Part II: Comparisons

Last entry I posted about a rating system for all players in general. To recap here’s the system in a nutshell.

Turnover Opportunity – Own Side: -5 points
Turnover Opportunity – Opponent Side: -3 points
Loss of 2 or more: -2 points
40% of necessary yardage on 1st down*: 1 point

    Delving Into a Numbers Game

Recently, I began reading The Hidden Game of Football by Bob Carroll, Pete Palmer and John Thorn. It’s an older book, dating back to the late 1980’s, but it gives some great information and different ways to look into stats. In one chapter in particular, they have a way to assess quality of a team, or an individual player. Not all three yard plays are equal. For instance, in the book they suggest that in order to “win” on a first down play, you must gain 40% of the necessary yards, otherwise it’s ...

  5. Goodspeed Revisited

"The Rock" came on a movie channel the other day. As always, I felt compelled to watch. I love that movie, saw it three times in the theater (ah, to be young and have discretionary income again...), and watch it anytime it comes on TV now.

    "Welcome to the Rock."

OK, that actually works better if you are with me and can hear my spot-on Sean Connery impersonation.

*Editor's Note: by "spot-on", James means if you are three ...

    To The Draft!

    To the Draft!

Every year, when your favorite teams’ season finally comes to it’s conclusion, whether it’s in the Super Bowl, the tournament or after a crash and burn regular season fiasco, everyone’s thoughts go to one shining star in the dreary offseason dimness: The NFL Draft. A lot of fans get dressed up in their gear and head out to New York City to watch the soap opera unfold. Others go to friends’ houses to party (I like to think of it as more of an excuse to get your significant ...

    Redskins Resolutions

It’s that time of year - time to pause, to reflect on the 365 days gone past, and to make steadfast promises to ourselves for those ahead. If you’re a member of the Washington Redskins front office or coaching staff, there’s good news and bad news. You get to start working on your New Year’s resolutions right away. You won’t have any playoff games to distract you from becoming the ‘new you’ you’ve always dreamt of being.

Come Monday, ‘carpe diem’ can begin ‘mosh skosh’.

  8. Week 17 - NY Giants

    Blognosticator - Stevenaa

Week 17 has arrived marking the end of the regular season. Unfortunately it’s marking the end of the season for our beloved Washington Redskins as well. At 6-9, they certainly haven’t set the world on fire. With all of the change, this is hardly surprising. What is surprising is the amount of drama we endured. Sadly a continuation of what we’ve come to expect from this organization. I really didn’t expect a stellar record this year; 8-8 maybe. ...

    Rebuilding.

Not since the days of the Black Death, Smallpox, and Cholera has a word struck such fear into the hearts of man. Or at least the hearts of football fans. That innocuous word symbolizes pain, suffering, and misery of the protracted variety, and merciless ridicule at the hands of opposing fans. To embrace it means loosening our psychic death grip on mediocrity in return for the promise of something better. Rebuilding is the dark empty void of the unknown, the chasm, the ...

    Skins Win with 10 Surprises

The Washington Redskins got into the holiday spirit, delivering their success-starved fans a little badly-needed Christmas cheer with an improbable 20-17 overtime win over the Jaguars. But it took 10 decidedly un-Redskins-like surprises to make good on Sunday’s bonus stocking stuffer and complete Redskin’s fans Christmas lists:

    #1 – Swing Away Merrill
Graham Gano made an early 48 yard field goal on the Redskins first possession of the game look oh-so-easy. The Redskins wouldn’t ...
