Default Washington Post: Shanahan Shouldn't Have Said That/Problems In The Locker Room

“Bein’ 3-6 really sucks because right now we’re on the outside looking in . . . I’m not thinkin’ about next year. That’s an offseason thing for me. But you know it’s hard when you see yourself in that type of position and your head coach is saying those types of things. It’s disappointing.”

Two players, on condition of anonymity, were bothered by Shanahan’s comments. They said it is one thing to realistically believe it’s time to evaluate personnel; it’s another to say it to the masses.

He's done imho. Get Payton on the phone.

I'm with Shanny on this.

Let's be objective: our personnel sucks...be it injury or talent, this team cannot compete. We aren't playing for the playoffs...

As for players commenting to the press, I suspect they're on the bubble for next year...no wonder they're afraid this season is over.

Tr1, even if you are the HC, and are okay quitting with 5 divisional games left--which is insane by the way, you don't come out and say it.

That's not coaching. That not motivating. And it's not leadership. He's done. Now it's just a matter of when.

He's challenging the players to audition for next year...I don't call that quitting...I call it being realistic.

Let's see who the quitters are...and weed them out.

Our chance for the playoffs is zero...let's be candid.

You cant expect players to bust ass and give 100% when you yourself sound like youve given up.

This is exactly right.

How a real leader, like RG3 would answer:

"I take full responsibility. I'm going to do everything I can to improve and fix this right now."

Shanny's answer: "We're giving up on this season. And instead of the buck stopping with me, the HC, I'm blaming the players."

He's a mouse. I promise you, if Sean Payton would agree to come here, Shanny would be gone at the end of this year. He's done. Now it's time to find the best replacement.

And you're telling me it's not the players? Shanny/Haslett didnt let Cruz score an 80 yard TD. Shanny/Haslett didnt drop 11 passes last week. Shanny/Haslett didnt let Cam Newton pick them apart. Each of those instances it's blatantly clear the players missed their assignments and didnt dow hat they're coached to do.

I'm not saying Shanny/Haslett are the answer, and yes i'm frustrated as HELL at this team and what we're going through, but i still think its necessary to call it how i see it. Everyone wants to roast the coaching staff, but brain farts from our players have cost us AT LEAST 3 games.

Dont really think if i agree with him doing it publicly, but maybe the locker room isn't responding, he's gotta do SOMETHING. Public embarrassment might be all he's got left.

The bye week can't get over soon enough. The Eagles game, against a struggling Philly team is the PERFECT opponent for us. This is a great chane for the players to come out against a divisional opponent who is down and right the ship, especially if Foles is under center by that point.

If the players have given up by that point, however, we've got SERIOUS problems.

Yeah, and who's responsible for the personnel?

Shamahan.

Since he's quit, he should go all the way, and retire at the end of the season.

And for those clamoring for Peyton, you can live without a defense?

Yeah, I remember this sentiment a couple years ago leading up to a Monday night game where they shredded us for 52 points.

Until we have a dramatic change on the defensive side of the ball, we will lose every game this year from here on out. People have a game plan to stop our offense now.

That's my concern. I hear the whispers in my head now. Our O has looked pretty ordinary the last two weeks. Now is that a result of playing a) without our top WR and top TE? b) playing an incredibly good D in Pitt? or c) a little of both, or d) have defenses figured us out?

We've got two weeks to get our collective **** together and come out with a good effort. The Eagles are not good this year. They were very good two year ago, not at all this year. We need a good showing.

The problem for Shanahan is he is the de facto GM. If he is frustrated with the players and lack of production then he essentially has to look in the mirror.

Remeber last year when he kept 8 or 9 receivers and had little to no depth on the OL?

That is the type of roster maneuvering you don't see from GMs of the top clubs.

I don't know of another time in Redskins history when a coach or GM would come out and stake his reputation on the duo of Grossman and Beck as Shanahan did in 2011.

When you look at him here, some of the personnel moves, the poor clock management, and the decision to do things like try a 62 yard FG with Cundiff, Shanahan definitely doesn't look like a guy who has won 2 Super Bowls.

He reminds me more of Norv.

Is anyone surprised? We saw the "give up" a week ago, against the Steelers. We were down two scores, driving in Giants' territory with over 6 minutes left. There was no hurry up, no sense of urgency, no real effort to try to win the game.

That was the most disappointed I've been in this team in a long, long time. We quit. Losing is acceptable. Quitting is not. And if Mike Shanahan (who I've backed 100% from day one) has quit, then I don't want him here.

And at this point, if I'm RG3, I'm putting my time in, finishing my rookie contract, and getting the hell out of Dodge. Then where do we go?

If we were playing Alabama in two weeks, I'm not sure I could pick us.

Meh....

And if that brand of media critic isn’t your style, check out this dialog from NBC’s “Football Night in America” broadcast.

“Would you ever say that as a coach nine games in?” Dan Patrick asked Tony Dungy.

“I would not,” Dungy said. “We’re still battling. We’ve got a chance. The Denver Broncos were 1-4 last year and made the playoffs. I would never tell my team that.”

“If you told me that, I would look at you and say, ‘Coach, we have seven games left. Why are you giving up on us?’ ” Rodney Harrison agreed. “Even if you look at our division, with the Cowboys, the Eagles, they’re not very good. The Giants may be the best team in our division. But we still have a chance.”
