I have never been a fan of Bobby Bowden. There are many reasons for this but I just want to state that right up front. When Florida State University joined the ACC, the dislike deepened as year after year the Seminoles football team pummeled my beloved hometown Terrapins.
After weighing my options when I made the decision to earn my degree, the Middle Eastern Studies program at Florida State caught my eye so I decided that FSU was the school for me.
Do you see my quandary? Last night as I watched the FSU/Miami game I found myself in the same position I have been in the last several years, I am a Seminole yet I cannot root for FSU football. Ugh! I think?
When I started watching the game, I could feel the guilt rising. But as the game wore on and I found myself rooting for Miami, I began to feel indifferent and then the same old feeling of contempt for FSU football emerged.
I could not, regardless of my recent Alumni status, find myself cheering for Bobby Bowden and the Seminoles as they lost to Miami. In fact, I reveled in it. I enjoyed watching as the referees reviewed the dropped pass in the end zone on the last play of the game because it prolonged the inevitable agony.
Am I wrong? Should I cheer on my alma mata? Is there anyone else who finds themselves in the same situation?
Haha! Go Terps!
