The 2nd preseason game of the 2009 REDSKIN season

What shall this season bring? Where is Miss Cleo when we need her?

Anyway........let's do this!!!

My very first OFFICIAL GAME THREAD on this great site.

Let's give the SKINS some love guys and gals!!

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!

Time to tailgate, fire up the grill, open a few, and talk some football.

Boone
08-22-09, 04:52 PM
Although so far, my tailgate consists of me, myself, and I, and I'll have to listen to the game on the radio, it beats living in the desert.

If there is a God, the 'shorten pre-season/add 2 games to the regular season' rumor will prove true. I'm ready to sacrifice some innocent creature for it if necessary.

Blondie

If you have the NFL channel, you can get the game tonight. It is being shown on that channel.

Bless their hearts for showing it!!!

Boone
08-22-09, 05:02 PM
I have directv for the Sunday Ticket, but can only access it once the regular season starts (directv satellites aren't where my dish can pick them up). Grrrr.... I enjoy listening to Sonny, Larry, and (when I can understand him) Sam though :)

So...

What would you like to see tonight or in Boone's case, hear? :)

Me: A competent drive on offense that results in points would suit me just fine.

Seeing some pressure applied to the opposing QB would be nice too.

Would also like to get a look at Rayner in the kicking game.

How bout the rest of you?

Boone
08-22-09, 05:27 PM
No injuries for starters.

#1 - Protection for Campbell.
#2 - Some holes for our running game.
#3 - A solid special teams effort (ST are always underrated)

Did I mention no injuries?

I want to see what our O line can do.

I honestly am not confident at this time.

Not exactly short and sweet, but here's my game day wish list (http://www.theomfield.com/2009/08/preseason-week-ii-game-day-wish-list.html).

Pass pro and a running lane or two from the OL.

A little downfield action from JC.

Some swagger from the D ... the first signs they might be who we think they are.

08-22-09, 05:51 PM
Om, I fully agree with your article. I would like to see Campbell let it fly at least a couple of times. He obviously doesnt feel very comfortable doing that in real games so why not try it in pre-season where it is basically a free game?

That and I want to see what Albert is gonna do. BOO YAH!!

I love watching a game, but sometimes these preseason affairs are just aggravating. I'll try to keep my expectations in check :)

Multi-Hail

Yessir, Bob.

Long offseason + Your team on TV = False Impression it's a real game.

Unless they win big of course, in which case preseason matters. ;)

Very Interesting....

Looking forward to seeing if Kelly can take advantage of this opportunity tonight.
If he can hold up,what a boost to the passing game he could be.

My friend Jose C. and I are going to watch together. If I keep putting him to my mouth I won't make it the entire game.

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great fake!!!

GO ROCK!!!!!!!!

Om
08-22-09, 07:41 PM
Fake punt. Think Zorn might be taking this one a little more seriously? :)

Was encouraging to see good pass pro on all three first plays. Bummer to see Jason not put the ball out front to Kelly on the first one, the bomb. That was six. Jason hung it up---wet football.

Boone
08-22-09, 07:41 PM
Thought you'd like that :)

Blondie
08-22-09, 07:43 PM

I am wayyyyyyyy liking it!!

2 great plays by Rock so far.

If our air game can get on track

And Samuels knows better.

Om
08-22-09, 07:44 PM
Samuels lines up off the line, takes 5-yard procedure penalty that negates first down throw to ARE.

Boone
08-22-09, 07:45 PM
Nice job CP :)

Blondie
08-22-09, 07:47 PM
CP showing some moves!!

Om

CP slashing.

Boone

Elephant
08-22-09, 07:48 PM
Does anyone think Zorn called the fake punt because he knew the offense needed to stay out there?

Boone
08-22-09, 07:49 PM
Don't like that play at all...

Blondie
08-22-09, 07:49 PM
Stalling down at the goal kills me!

Om
08-22-09, 07:49 PM
CP has matured so much as a runner ... incredible patience on the move.

And some movement up front against the Steeler front. Anyone breathing a little easier?

*

Damn. Tentative run by Betts on 3rd and 1. Really would have like to see him slam that one up in there.

Friggin' preseason.

Time out ... gotta go for it here.

Boone
08-22-09, 07:49 PM
You either run right at the tackle here, or roll Jason for the corner.

Om
08-22-09, 07:50 PM
One thing about Zorn's goal line offense ... he does not like to pass the ball. Man up, gents.

Om
08-22-09, 07:51 PM
Booo. FG?

Come on Zorny.

*

Oh ... Betts actually LOST 2 yards on that 3rd down play. Kicking from the 3 makes sense.

Boone
08-22-09, 07:53 PM
Not really. It's the pre-season. Sorry, but there will be times when you have to risk going for it. Makes a lot more sense to practice that than a standard field goal.

If you ask me :)

Blondie
08-22-09, 07:53 PM
Points.

The first points of the season!!

Defense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Defense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elephant
08-22-09, 07:57 PM
The question I posed a few minutes ago was ambiguous, of course he wanted to stay out there. What I meant to infer is that his decision to attempt the fake was crucial because our offense could not have come out after 3 and out after last week's performance.

We needed the drive that we ended up having and I think Zorn knew how important it was to stay on the field.

Blondie
08-22-09, 07:57 PM
The audio is killing me!!

GO SKINS DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!

Om
08-22-09, 07:57 PM
Carter and Haynesworth blow up the OL in the first play, causing a hold.

Line is all OVER teh QB on 2nd down, forcing throw away.

I could get used to this.

WOO HOO!! DHALL!!

Blondie

That call is so bogus.

Om
08-22-09, 08:00 PM
DeAngelo gets an AWFUL personal foul call to give Steelers a gift 1st down. This after Big Albert gets held blatantly with no call.

Some things never change.

Om
08-22-09, 08:03 PM
Total fluke play for a long 1st down. No wonder the Steelers win Super Bowls.

Jesus.

Blondie
08-22-09, 08:03 PM
If it didnt touch the ground that was a crazy catch by S. Holmes!

Elephant

Only saw one replay but I am 99.5 % sure it hit the ground!

Om
08-22-09, 08:06 PM
It hit the ground. Clear call. Makes you wonder how an entire NFL crew could miss it.

Preseason for zebras too, I guess.

Boone

It's all about the 'work', right?

Preseason for zebras too, I guess.

Pre-season more than likely, but I am concerned with that call against D. Hall, the missed holding call on Big Al and this certainty of a completion on an obvious incompletion, are these refs star struck for the World Champions?

Boone
08-22-09, 08:10 PM
Who the **** is 'Holmes'?

Sheesh.

Blondie
08-22-09, 08:10 PM
Sigh. Seeing him throw it down the field is no big deal if it can't be completed.

Om
08-22-09, 08:10 PM
I thought it was the pre-season Mark?

It's all about the 'work', right?

Changing your tune and hoping for a 'win'? :)
Nah, it wasn't that. Zorn needed to reward the offense for the long drive and get the sure points. To come away empty there would have been deflating as hell. Part of preseason is building flow/confidence too.

*

I've just decided Jason Campbell can't throw deep with a wet football. That's two pretty really ugly passes.

Om
08-22-09, 08:11 PM
Ugly, ugly series. So much for flow/confidence.

Blondie
08-22-09, 08:11 PM

Whiskeypeet
08-22-09, 08:13 PM
Seems like Jason would have been well served to step up on that one rather that drop back into the end zone. I'll have to watch that play again.

Either way it would make me feel real good to see him connect on one of those long throws. Guy needs to work on his touch/accuracy on those.

Om
08-22-09, 08:13 PM
Great pass rush.

God I love that. :)

Om
08-22-09, 08:16 PM

Whiskeypeet

They brought Landry on that long third down conversion. I like to see that but they have to get to the QB when he isn't in the secondary.

Blondie
08-22-09, 08:16 PM
And this is not their starting QB. Wow.

Om
08-22-09, 08:17 PM
****.

No pressure, soft middle.

Om
08-22-09, 08:18 PM
Strange call by Blache. No rush, secondary 10 yard off?

Orakpo in great position, but had no clue where the ball was. :)

Om

Coulda walked in :(

Boone
08-22-09, 08:20 PM
To be fair, Charlie Batch has ALWAYS been a very underrated QB :) He's arguably a drop-off from Roethlisberger, one of the most overrated QBs ever ....

Don't know that I've ever seen Jason look quite as out of sync. Way it looks, it's either him or the 10 other guys. He better get something going on the next drive or it's going to be a very ugly week.

Boone
08-22-09, 08:29 PM

Blondie
08-22-09, 08:29 PM

Boone
08-22-09, 08:30 PM
Campbell better watch out - with Zorn's job on the line, we could see Collins start opening day he keeps this up.

And this week - I'm seeing it, not just hearing it....

Blondie

Don't know that I've ever seen Jason look quite as out of sync. Way it looks, it's either him or the 10 other guys. He better get something going on the next drive or it's going to be a very ugly week.

I think he has been this out of sync many times in the past.

Boone
08-22-09, 08:32 PM
I like Jason, and don't blame him for last year's implosion. He played well last year overall. I'm just not seeing the comfort level I was expecting this season. Not yet anyway.

Is it just me, or do the Redskins seem to spend most of every game deep in their own end?

Elephant

Do they bring JC in for one more drive?

Boone
08-22-09, 08:34 PM
Is it just me, or do the Redskins seem to spend most of every game deep in their own end?

Yeah.

It's our trademark. I'll bet if we could run stats, we lead the league in crappy starting field position.

Boone
08-22-09, 08:35 PM
Do they bring JC in for one more drive?

I would.

But who knows...

Om
08-22-09, 08:35 PM
Tell you what, Jason has done nothing to quiet his detractors. I know there's no game plan and all, but there's just a certain comfort/command level you expect to see from your starting QB that he simply isn't exhibiting.

If we can see it, you know Zorn can.

Boone
08-22-09, 08:35 PM

The running game seems to have a little more space to run. Todd Collins presence?

Boone
08-22-09, 08:41 PM
It IS the pre-season, so you really can't make a true assessment. Because as long as it 'doesn't count', well....it really doesn't 'count' :)

But he doesn't seem to have 'it'. If we're in a 'win now' mode - Collins is superior. If we're in a 'grow and develop' stage, I don't see much to make me believe Campbell is ever going to be a star.

Elephant
08-22-09, 08:41 PM
Mason looked good in this drive, but if he wants to make this team he has to run that pattern past the first down marker.

Whiskeypeet
08-22-09, 08:59 PM
I'm getting a little depressed watching this. Orakpo continues to look good but man the offense, under both QBs, hasn't impressed too much. I appreciate the first drive of the game but can't help but think they didn't really "deserve" it given the fake punt.

Boone
08-22-09, 08:59 PM
I'm not. Why IS he still out there? Doesn't make a lot of sense... he's going to be valuable come the regular season - I'd have him sitting by now...

Om
08-22-09, 08:59 PM
I'm going to be writing about 3rd downs this week. Haven't looked at the numbers yet, but we've gotten killed on 3rd downs, both sides. As always. Just kills a team.

Given his relative inexperience at LB I think you need to keep Orakpo on the field a little more than you probably would if he were only lining up at DE....and its only the 2nd quarter. Agreed though that there is a element of, maybe unnecessary, risk having out there at this stage of the game.

Whiskeypeet

OM, regarding you assertion about 3rd downs, I agree. I am not gonna touch on the offense, but the D does seem to allow long third down conversions. We have seen this a lot over the past several years.

Do you think it is something in the defensive scheme or more in execution? I know execution is always a factor, but in this containing style of D, is there an element to it that allows these long third down conversions to occur?

I was just teasing Blondie. Hindsight is always 20/20 and as Joey T mentioned that was also on Thomas.

Plus, for a number of reasons Collins seems to be a lot more comfortable running the offense than JC. One has to wonder how much rope JC gets in the preason before Zorn gives serious thought to Collins as the starter.

I think in previous years it's simply been lack of pass rushing talent, E. QB's have simply had too much time and too many lanes---no secondary can hold up in the NFL w/o a pass rush.

Clearly that's what Cerrato is trying address this year with AH, Orakpo & Jarmon. What will remain to be seen is if Blache adjusts his conservative schemes enough, and the new pass rush talent is good enough, to turn that around and start forcing QB's to throw when they HAVE to, instead of when they WANT to. That's what other teams routinely do to us, and why Redskins games look like they do, with the Skins always on their own end and playing from behind.

I'd like to think that first series, where the rush was NUTS and swarming Batch, was Blache playing with his new toy and turning them loose a bit, and that everything that's happened since---no rush, no coverage, no success---is Blache reverting to his usual preseason formula of not giving a damn about results and just evaluating individual players.

After watching Leftwich last year and Batch tonight, I wish our starting qb was as good as Pittsburgh's second string.

Had the same thought watching Batch vs Campbell, Chris. Hate to admit it, but I did.

Zorn woke up this morning and decided he wants to be called Ground Jim.

Rock says he is in better shape this year than ever in the past. Quicker and in better shape. I will be devastated if he is not here. He is truly showing tonight he can still do it.

Oh my! This doesn't bode well for young Colt! The coaches must really not like what they see in Colt Brennan. But I'll tell you what, Daniels just had a heck of a drive down the field.

Om

Marko. Mitchell. :)

Good for Chase. Zorn only let him throw on 3rd down when the Steelers knew it was coming, but he converted 3 times.

Will someone please tell Comcast to lose that ridiculous mini-window they use to show game action while their sidline reporter's doing an interview? Hello? It's 2009. Time to figure out football fans don't care about sideline fluff while the game is going on.

GREAT PASS TO DAVIS!!

Chase Daniels has just given the people of Washington something to talk about for sure!

The new scenario: :new_idea: Trade JC! Pick up a 2nd or 3rd round pick, start Collins until Daniels can be groomed, and keep Colt as the 3rd string QB. :rotflmao:

I'm not laughing :)

JC won't be a Redskin next year - that's my prediction - not based on preseason, just a feeling he doesn't have 'it'. So I wouldn't revolt if we made a dramatic decision...

I'll tell you what! Colt ain't going down w/out a fight! He looks good so far on this drive.

These two (Colt and Chase) look like they have better decision making skills than Jason Campbell.

Edit: Tried to force that one. Not a good decision! haha

Ugh. Colt did the one thing you can't do ... telegraph a pass late over the middle.

Plus he did it in scoring range, with the game in hand.

Not good.

Brennan's working his way right off this squad, something I would have considered highly unlikely going into the pre-season....

Hard not to give Chase the edge right now.

Oh, and Chris Wilson continues to be my early favorite for breakout player of the year. :)

What has me thinking is that Chase did not see any time last week. Why not? It was obvious Colt was not doing well. This is going to be an interesting week in Redskins Park.

this is why I posted a separate thread about Colt and Chase. Chase seems to have improved measurably since the first minicamp while Colt seems to have hit a plateau.

for a developmental quarterback with two vets ahead of you, that's not a good sign for Colt being on the team in 2009.

Best thing about the end of this one, for me, was watching Blache be aggressive and let his young puppies get after the QB. Was fully expecting our usual passive "prevent" approach, but it didn't happen. Gotta love the feeling of finishing aggressive and making it happen, rather than sitting back and hoping it does.

it's a lot easier to be aggressive when you have better players on the field.

the additional depth along the DL had Kedric Golston and Chris Wilson out there playing in garbage time in the fourth quarter. Pittsburgh's offensive line didn't have anyone of that caliber in their second and third line ranks to block them effectively.

And for anyone who thought taking Jeremy Jarmon was a mistake, care to reconsider?

Jarmon is a cat-quick DE for a guy who plays between 275-280. He could be on the other side of Brian Orakpo for the next 4-5 years in Washington.

It has to be a mistake, doesn't it. Didn't Cerrato make the pick? ;)

I'm going to be writing about 3rd downs this week. Haven't looked at the numbers yet, but we've gotten killed on 3rd downs, both sides. As always. Just kills a team.

Just to give you some numbers-this comes from the Cold Hard Football Facts website-in the 2008 regular season the 'Skins ranked 26th in the league with a 35.2% third-down conversion rate.

Is it just me, or do the Redskins seem to spend most of every game deep in their own end?

My friends are tired of hearing me talk about that. Last season it seemed like at least half the drives started at their own 20 or deeper. It's like some kind of mystic hex. The Redskins are not going to score much this season without good starting field position.

So no, it's not just you.

Yes, the Redskins were fourth in the league on kick returns, but 22nd on punt returns.

first downs and red zone conversions?

might help if we went back to the drawing board and came up with something other than Ladell Betts up the middle on consecutive plays from inside the 5.

that is not going to work against the Steelers in preseason or during the regular season.

I'm guessing Zorn and Co have something else for that this year with the new 2 TE sets, ARE in the slot and other options we may not have thought of yet but they really don't want to give the Giants, Eagles and Cowboys film if it at this point yet. If they don't have something else, well...what is the Dan paying them for?
