View Full Version : Physical Fitness/Training Thread
This is where we post our training results, physical tasks that we've completed that we're proud of or questions to other members of the forum.
I've been weight training for ten years, I've been powerlifting for five years.
Recently I just started taking mixed martial arts classes.
I'll gladly answer questions posted here as well... If I can anyways. I know a good amount of stuff, but man, the amount of stuff I don't know is crazy long as well :)
Feel free to discuss anything in here...
I know the p90x craze is in full swing, so I'm sure we have some of you guys in here as well :)
I actually took up cycling around Christmas...its tough to ride during the week, but my brother and I try and get in a 40-45 mile ride every weekend. That's made a big difference for me. I love to run, but as I get older, my joints take a beating - so riding is a better alternative. I work in some bowflex. I'm probably in the best shape I've been in in a decade right now. And I love to ride - it's never boring because the scenery and experience is always different. Getting geared up to do the 'Tour to Tanglewood' here in a month+, two days of 50 miles each with camping/drinking overnight in between, all to benefit MS research. Looking forward to that.

Right now I'm walking around the lake here by my house and its 6.5 miles total. I do it usually twice a week and then try to lift during the off days. some weeks I am really good and hit every day and some days I dont.
the biggest thing for me is changing how I eat at work. I now have 2 granola bars and a gatorade for breakfast and a salad from Wendys or BK for lunch instead of the #2 breakfast heart attack burger combo and the #5 sloppy gutbuster burger combo large size for lunch. its made a HUGE difference too..

Got inspired by Mike Williams, lost about 12 lbs. Started eating better and training with the Nintendo Wii. You get one hell of a work out by jogging and boxing with it.
Then had some job issues....started over-eating again and not working out. Gained the weight back. Going to try again..........
That happens, WD.
Everyone falls, it's how you get up that matters man. Stay focused and get it done, I'm sure you'll get the job done! :)
I was big into weights for 30 years and still have a fully equipped gym in my garage.
Last October I made the decision to move more towards cardio-vascular fitness improvement. I started a regimen based on running with walking recovery periods as needed. My first couple of times out I could only run about 200 yards before needing to walk. It took me almost three weeks (going out 5 times per week) to make it one mile without stopping.
This month I will run close to 90 miles. It would be higher, and much faster, but for the extreme heat and humidity we experience down here in the summer. It's like running under water at times. I like competing in 5K and 5 mile races. In January I'm going to attempt my first half-marathon.
I'm not one of those who loves running, but I do love it when I'm finished. The sense of accomplishment is what I'm addicted to.
I expect to average around 120 miles a month from October- April/May. I also do core strengthening workouts plus assorted push-ups and dips about 2-3 times per week.
Just got back from a 38 mile ride through Alamance Couty in (way) rural N.C. Really pretty, but a lot of up and down. We didn't go as far as I would have liked, but it was a pretty good workout. For those that have let it go a bit in recent years, I really recommend the bike thing - most places have community rides so you can start out slow and easy with plenty of other folks who may not be in super shape. It's really an addictive sport.
Six miles today. A real 'underwater' day today with the temperature at 85° and high humidity lending itself to a heat index of 96°. :thud:

the wife and I began working out at the gym again about 8 weeks ago. Two nights lifting and two nights cardio. we do another day or two of bicycling or roller blading.
Then thursday, after working hard on legs the night before, I did a front kick at work and tore my hamstring badly. Limping and having trouble do much of anything. Two days of Ice, now alternating with heat and ice. going to PT tomorrow. Any advise on healing a hamstring injury would be appreciated.
I wouldn't heat it, bud. Stick with ice for the swelling.

I would do both..ice it for the initial swelling but then put heat on it to help keep it loose and relaxed.
eat plenty of bananas and drink plenty of fluid to help heal the muscle.
Todays workout:
Barbell Hang Cleans (Bar x 5, 95x5, 135x5) - Went light, pinched nerve in my neck sent shooting pains through my left arm with each rep. Felt strange... Yet awesome.
Ultra Wide Stance Romainian Deadlift (225x5, 275x5, 315x5) Went too light. Too easy.
Conditioning Work:
50 Box Jumps
100 Push Ups
100 Sit Ups
20 Pull Ups
1 mile run
19 minutes 57 seconds.
That mile was the longest damn mile I've ever run in my life. I can't run distances worth a damn. I'm more trained for power lifting and combat sports. I'm trying to get a little bit better well-rounded now though.
In January, I was 201 pounds. Not fat, but not in great shape either. In July, I'm down to 174. I feel better than I've felt my entire life. I'm faster, stronger and much more agile.
If I start fighting MMA, I'll be fighting at 165, so I want to walk at around 170. Gotta keep plugging :)

I want to tone up and if I take a certain career path I am looking into I need to be buff enough to kick all of your butts! I do have one issue though. I hate the gym. More like I despise the gym. I will run around and lift tailgate coolers, walk my hounds etc all day long but the minute I walk into a gym I am bored to death. I have tried the TV, music, book thing but it never helps. I want to do something to build up my knee and just to tone up but I have no clue what to do. Any suggestions?

huly - have you tried working out with a friend? how about a personal trainer? when i tore my achilles tendon (twice) a few years ago, i never would have made it back without my physical therapist. he understood when to kick my behind to get me going.
you might also try to figure out why you don't like the gym and change venues for your workouts...

Yes I have tried that and I still hate it. When I tore my knee I thought therapy was some kind of torture my doctor was making me go through for not listening to him and destroying my knee again but my mom made me go.
I am ADHD and being so hyper I get bored in seconds. Then my mind starts going and I can think of 50 better things to be doing then I can not get it to shut up then I am ready to leave as soon as I get there. I am a very active person (I guess that comes with being hyper ) but I can not find a way to keep myself entertained in a gym.
Today:
Bench (135x3, 225x3, 245x3) - Easy day. Went light. My joints hate me :)
DB Incline Flyes (3x25lbx10) - Light again.
Conditioning:

Hammer Curls 5 w/ each arm
Alternating Military Press 10 w/ each arm
Forward Lunge 10 w/ each leg
Alternating Bent Over Row 10 w/ each arm
Backward Lunge w/ Overhead Press 10 w/ each leg
Romainian Deadlift 20 reps
Standing Calf Raises 30 reps
Did 20s on the first set, 25's on the second.
Cardio:
10 minutes of HIIT

Try running. and every 1/4 of a mile or so stop and do 10 pushups and 10 situps. or buy a bunch of workout tapes. does ESPN still do the workout shows on early AM? just change it up often. hike one day, run the next. do regular home weights one or go to the gym for a minute the other.
you can keep it changing enough that you wont get bored...or at least I hope so. and good luck to you in your career choice!!

good point, mike. there used to be a trail near U of M college park with workout stations to break the monotony of your jog. should be similar trails all over the area.

plus you dont wanna do too much of the same workout anyways because your muscles will get used to it. you wanna "shock" them every now and then to get that extra burn and those little defined ones to pop out too..
huly you have NO weight to lose but if you wanna tone then just do more reps with lighter weights. do sets of 15 with 10 lbs less then what you normally would.
I need to rebuild a knee prior to running etc. My knee will make grown men and trainers squirm. I can move my knee cap in every direction possible. I tore my ACL and MCL in highschool, had a bad orthopedic, decided to then try soccer, then ended up in surgery.

damn..eliptical/bike..low impact
I stopped going to the gym about 2 months ago. I've gained about 10 lbs in the process, even though I walk/run several times a week- I just know it's not enough. My issue is time. I get up at 5am, and after my commute I'm usually home about 5:30-6pm. Once I get home, I want to go to sleep, not the gym. I've tried to get up at 4- yeah, I'm a zombie/bear mix when that happens. I'm in the roller coaster mode right now, up and down 10-15 lbs every few months since my knee surgery last year. I'm good with my nutrition, I just need to figure out a workout schedule and stick with it.

while Im watching TV sometimes I will grab the broom, put it across my shoulders and just do twists. I will sometimes do situps during commercials. other times I will do as many pushups as I can while a ESPN story is going on.
so many little things you can do. or something as simple as flexing and holding a certain muscle even does a little bit. push against a door jam...resistance builds great muscles too.

great ideas...I have started to do lunges across my back yard in the evening. gives me a chance to pick up dog poo, throw the ball and get my own exercising in. last night took dogs to ball field by my house and I was lunging all across the field while they played.

mike, kdawg & others - how much time do you devote to workouts every day? feeling guilty when i see your daily repertoire and i'm doing less than an hr/day and nothing close to the iron y'all are pressing!
I've been lifting for a long time, despite the fact I'm only 24.
My workouts are typically an 45 minutes lifting, 15-20 mins cardio, 20 minutes of shadow boxing.
2-3 days a week I'm doing 2.5-3 hours of MMA.
Today:
EASY DAY! WOOO!
Push Press 135x5, 145x5, 155x5
T-Bar Rows 1 platex5, 2 plates x5, 3 plates x5
Mini Iso Complex: 25 lbs (lat raises, front raises, hammer curls, one arm db skull crushers)
10 mins of Incline Walk (with one sprint on an MPH of 12.0 for 45 seconds) at a 10% grade.
And in a couple hours I'll be doing 20-30 mins of shadow boxing.
MMA tomorrow at noon.
I weighed in at 173 today. When I start fighting in the cage I'll be fighting at 165, so I need to get to 170 and stay there.

I can be in and out in less then an hour if I can get from station to station quickly with no issues.
You are supposed to take 60 seconds between sets so you can recover a little and feel it but I sometimes just get in a zone and just around.
Most of the time my weight lifting lasts about 30-40 minutes and the rest of it is abs and sweating in the sauna. I can be there around 1-1:15.
last night was ab-city..population ME and PAAAIIN!!!
Rest is dependent on what you're doing. As a power lifter, my rest periods are 2-3 minutes between sets. When I do lighter weight stuff, I keep it to 30-60 seconds of rest.
But there's no real rule. When you're ready to go, go. Just make sure you wait at least 30 seconds. :)

I think there are things that you have to worry about and things you worry about too much in the gym or with working out period.
Am I resting enough? Your body knows and you will know. Do you tire out before you hit 10 on the rep? Are you sweating or breathing heavily? Am I lifting enough/too much?
I personally was one of those guys who wanted to be just like all the rest of the big guys in the gym and see how much I could push up on the bench just so I could have a cool number when I said it. "Yeah, I did 220 ten times". It was silly, I got bulky and not cut up and I ended up not being happy with the results I got. Now I lift with 180 and do more reps in my set and feel SO much better. It is what fits my body and what makes me want to go back and do it again. And this time I know when I get back to lifting *** I will be there strong and not just trying to prove something.
Also with rest. My friend Jake can be in and out of the gym in 45 minutes MAX. Dude is a freaking monster and puts anything I can do to shame. Me on the other hand, I will sometimes get to where I am either tired or not focused and will need more time then that. Whatever fits my style and how I am feeling on that day will determine it. Last night I was lifting and I got so zoned out I noticed the clock and it was 1.5 hours later. OOPS!! haha
Last thing..and probably the most important. What are you putting IN your body? What do you eat? I was a HUGE fast food guy (because I am lazy and didnt cook) and would eat it for breakfast and lunch. Well we have all seen "Super Size Me" and we know where it all goes. Now I am all about granola bars, Gatorades and salads. It is what I have found that I like. Brown rice for dinner with a little soy sauce, lots of fish, and so much water I sometimes think my eyeballs are swimming. Bananas for my muscles to heal faster, apples for caffiene, raisins to help detoxify, etc. Also, you want to take a multivitamin or at least I do. I take the GNC Mega Man multi and it works wonders.
Just figure out what works for you and what you are happy with and stick with it.
I logged 83+ miles in July, my highest monthly total to date in the hottest, most humid, month of the year so far.
I plan to top 100 in August before moving to more speed work in September in preparation for my first 5K of the season on October 4th.
Today:
Bench (180x5, 210x5, 240x8)
Pull Ups (7 sets of 5)
Mini Complex:
Kroc Rows
One arm DB Lat Raises
DB Military Press
Hammer Curls
DB One Arm Skull Crushers
DB Clean and Jerk
3 sets, 10 reps of all except Kroc Rows/DB Clean and Jerk which I did heavier for 5, 3, 1 reps.
30 mins of Shadow Boxing and Plyometrics

I'm no health nut, but, during the week, I eat sensibly and avoid alcohol, (during the week that is :)) I drink nothing but water, coffee and G2's. On weekends and holiday's add beer to that equation.
We're fortunate enough to go to have a Gold's gym across the street.
I go four days a week. Light lifting and 30-45 minutes of cardio afterwards.
I definitely won't win any body-building contests, but I'm decent shape, (I've maintained 215lbs for past 20+ years), and have a lot of energy.
I could probably drop to 200 if I dieted and quit drinking, but good food and drink is one of lifes pleasures and ain't no way I'm giving that up. To me life ain't worth living if you have to eat Kashi & salads all the time. Besides, I would look like a bean-pole at 200lbs.
BTW, great thread, I like to see other peoples routines.

last night I took a Bikram Yoga class. yeah, yeah go ahead and laugh at me for it but they heated the room up to 95 degrees and then I tried to hold these poses for the right amount of time without looking silly.
When I was done I had sweated so much I took my shirt off and rang it out like a wet towel. There was so much sweat in it that it made a puddle and then ran down the street. The class was 90 minutes and it was amazing. I could feel joints opening and muscles streching that I had never used before. I went to bed a little sore last night but with 2 Advil I was back to normal and when I woke up this morning I felt like a new man...
I recommend it for anyone who wants to try it..
I don't think there's anything to laugh at there :) I've never tried it, but I've had more than a few friends share the same kind of experience. Go for it brother
I've actually gained some weight recently - started lifting recently (mostly light weights with lots of reps) and think that's probably why. I've got good genes and add muscle pretty quickly. Going to take the bike riding up a couple notches soon. Doing 50 miles tomorrow.
I'm in the best shape I've been in in over a decade. That can't be a bad thing :)
50 mile bike ride this morning. I'm feeling it a little bit, gonna take a nice long shower and warm up some steak from last night. That'll help :)

My daughter's boyfriend is a big fan of Vikram yoga, and he's a college athlete.
Us older folks could all benefit much more from the core strength and flexibility work, aside from anything else.
40 miles on the bike today. We rode south of Greensboro (it's all cross-compartment that way) and even though it didn't feel like a hard ride, the hills must've taken it out of me. I'm whooped. Doing 100 miles in a few weeks (its a 2 day ride to raise money for MS research) - looking forward to that...
Rode 42 miles yesterday - should've been easy, but had to ride solo (my brother whom I usually ride with, was under the weather). Couple that with a cold, grey, damp day, and it wasn't much fun.
Was supposed to play soccer today in a 45 and up league (team name, the 'fossils' :) ), but I got stomped on during our opening game and am halfway through losing a big toenail (nasty). Figured I'd be smart to skip it today.
Next weekend is the 100 mile ride for MS research. Looking forward to that....
Finished the 'Tour to Tanglewood', about 100 miles on the road over 2 days. Rainy as hell Saturday, riding my nephews bike and hungover today (I broke a spoke at the end of yesterday's ride). A lot of fun hanging with my brother Jim

I lift 4 days a week. Legs one day and upper body the other three, focusing on one or two body parts each day. I do 5 circuits of 5 exercises plus some ab work each circuit. The circuits are pyramids. I.E. the first circuit I use a weight that I try to lift 12 times, the second circuit I increase the weight and try for 9 reps and the 3rd circuit more weight and a goal 6 reps, then back to the 9 and 12 weight for the last two circuits. When I can reach my goal on both the front and back side of the circuit (i.e. I can lift the weight 12 times on both the first and 5th circuits I increase that weight the next time.) The result is that for those last 3 circuits I am usually lifting to failure. But the first two circuits are usually pretty easy. That means that I am well warmed up before I get to the hard part. This has kept me injury free which is important at my age 56. The whole workout takes about an hour, so I’m moving between sets pretty quickly.
I also change up the workout every three months. Doing different exercises or changing grips from a wide to a narrow, etc. just to keep it fresh. I’m pretty happy with the results and actually look forward to going to the gym.
I don’t do enough aerobic work though, which is something I need to rectify. Especially since I love to eat. I have a treadmill and elliptical machine at home so I really have no excuse. Plus I have world class x-country skiing and mountain biking trails just a 10 minute drive from my home.

This really freaked me out. I was doing my Chest/Biceps workout and had just started my 5th and final circuit. I did the first exercise (dips) and I felt my heart racing. I wasn’t breathing hard and there was no pain but my heart was really going fast. I was having a hard time taking my own pulse so I hopped on an exercise bike and pedaling real slow I used the sensors and it gave my heart rate at 195. So I sat down for a few minutes and then tried it again and it was in the 140’s and I normally have to work hard on that bike to get it up to a target of 130.
Naturally being a dumb ass, I finished my workout although I didn’t push myself and went home and checked my blood pressure. It was 129/75 which is a little below normal for me and my heart rate was 85, which is a little high. My normal resting HR is in the 70’s.
Anybody else ever have something like this happen?
That almost sounds like a burst of atrial fibrillation Alaskan. That's where the top half of your heart (atria) go into a rapid rhythm. It's not uncommon. You might want to get checked out if you notice it happening again. A lot of things can contribute to it (low potassium from drinking a lot of caffeinated beverages is one potential cause)...

Thanks Boone. If it happens again I will get to a doctor. It could be caffeine as I do like my coffee.:)
