It's your site--don't hesitate to throw ideas, suggestions and/or constructive criticism our way. If we can agree they would improve the BGO experience, we'll do our best to make it happen.

Just an FYI. The mobile version of the site seems to be working well. You were right when you said it's clean and uncluttered and I've encountered no glitches so far.

Great job guys!

Great - really appreciate the feedback - we obviously could only test that mod on a limited basis until we had real members. Our biggest priority was functionality and ease of use (vs. 'pretty' and 'bells and whistles'). So its great to get some immediate feedback. Keep it coming!

Hey LOD - are you seeing the simplified 'BGO Mobile' skin or does the site appear as it does here...?

Curious as we've only done limited testing with that option :)

Me too. Tested it out tonight while at a concert in the part and it worked great on my Blackberry. I was really impressed too. I don't like surfing using my phone and tend to avoid it but this was much better than any other site I have tried. I would have left this message that way if I could have remembered my login. :anonymous:

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. One other mobile issue. Quoted text is highlighted in red which is awfully difficult to read with black text...especially since the text is very small. Could we perhaps get the default for that changed to something with a bit more contrast, say, yellow or white maybe?

I have a serious question.

In the BGO Exclusive area I have seen that Boone made a few threads about players and their bios. Is this just something he wants to do or can we make one too?

I was thinking a Charles Mann or Alvin Walton one personally but I wanna know what the deal is first.

not a suggestion but feedback..

the "visit the enemy" part on the front page is so cool. I never knew every teams link and now all I have to do is click the dropdown box and there it is.

im not a member of the gloryofthepast chargers site simply because i live in SD. ive been welcomed (as much as tomgiantsfan) over there.

thanks for that..your ideas are awesome

Will there also be a classified section or trading post?

Makes sense, Yusuf. We'll dig into the code and see what we can do. Thanks for the suggestion ...

Absolutely you can write retrospectives, Mike. The BGO Exclusives forum was put together with the thought mind to house original content we will be providing--Mike Richman will be doing regular pieces, and the rest of us staff types may try our hand once in a while as well--but we'd certainly be willing to consider posting articles written by BGO members there as well.

We haven't formulated any 'official' policies on that, so we'll go case-by-case until we see how things develop. Please feel free to contact us via PM if you want to talk specifics.

For the record, regardless of where it ends up getting posted, we absolutely encourage you and anyone else who wants to write serious Redskins-related articles to dive in. It's all about the content--let's let that decide where it ends up getting posted. :)

Glad you like it, Mike. I'm going to be getting some serious use out of that one myself. I used to have a bookmarks section loaded with links to different NFL team sites, but it was a pain to maintain and didn't help me much when I was at work or using my laptop. No more ... this thing is one-stop shopping and far more comprehensive a collection than I ever had.

Big ups to Boone--that was his brainchild.

You mean like the countdown clock to opening day on the front page (right column, half way down), brother? ;)

A Classified/Trading post is a good idea. We'll bat it around and come up with something that works for BGO. Good lookin' out ...

Okay - I've changed the burgundy background for quoted text to bright yellow - you shouldn't have any problem reading now :)

You may have to log out and log back in on your portable device to see the change (I did). Let me know if that's better...

...better by perhaps only a factor of 1000 or so. Now you'll have to deal with the ire of my opthamologist who was no doubt expecting a "stimulus package" of his own out of the black on burgundy text. :)

Appreciate it, Yusuf. I have to admit I even dragged my stogy old self over to the Arcade yesterday and owned me a couple of championships. I like those little trophies, what can I say?

On a more serious note ... we talked about it numerous times while putting the place together; you can build a house to look as pretty as you want, but in the end it's still just a house. It's when the family settles in and starts building memories that it becomes a home. That's where you folks come in, and we become the ones saying thank you. :)

I can't wait till we get a few more folks playing the Arcade - not only can you challenge someone 1 on 1 on a given game (just click on their username and you'll see the option to issue a challenge) but you can set up and play 2, 4, or 8 man tournaments on any game in the Arcade....definitely fun.

I've got a Skeeball thing I'm probably going to have to seek professional help with....

I'm using a BB with the Opera mini browser. When I select a new post and it takes me to page 2 and beyond when I try to select the previous page or the 1st page of the post it doesn't take me but rather it refreshes the current page.

Any chance that you'll eventually recreate a version of the old Games Database? I used to love that feature.

It's crossed our minds :) The software piece of it isn't hard - it's locating and plugging in the data itself that's a pretty daunting task. Lets just say it's something we'll look at ....

Mark The Homer
08-17-09, 07:43 PM
From what I've heard, all the data is sitting at redskinsdb dot com and redskinsdb dot player.asp ready to be plucked. Not an easy task or small task, but easier and quicker than doing it the way it was done the first time...

In fact, I've already taken the liberty of lifting the A through Z player data from the players page a couple months ago. I've got it all saved in a text file. The individual player data with colleges and years attended and hometown and what-not still needs to be plucked.

A few volunteers would help.

I volunteer to do all the players on page A, just to start things off.

Of course, there's all the game data too. My point is, it's not really lost. It's there, waiting.

I would like to reserve a right to also broadcast the finished product on ES in honor and in respect for DH.

Hey guys...

How about a UserCP setting that notifies you when somebody uses the "quote my post" button? I would have paid for this to be added to that "other" site to help address anyone who commented on specifically what I said...without having to weed through all the other bs. IMO it would promote more comeback to threads where we simply do not have the time to drill through every single post and promote more discussion too. At least from me.

Just a thought... Keep up the good work!

You can do just about anything - its just php coding. The BG Overdrive feature in the football forums? Total custom coding job.

So DM, what you're asking for is a mod where you click the user cp, and there's an option called 'My Quoted Posts' - which when clicked takes you to a list of any posts where one of your posts was quoted by another member - that it?

Appreciate the generous offer, brother. Games and player databases are definitely things we've talked about and will incorporate at some point--it's just a matter of time and priorities. We have ideas about some different ways we'd like to set up and present them, we just haven't worked it all through yet. One thing we do know ... when we do 'go there' it will be unique to BGO, not indistinguishable from the original ES version, as the redskins.db version turned out to be. I still marvel at that sometimes.

That would be amazing if that could be done. I always thought things like that were very difficult, mostly because of conflicts with other things. I don't have any experience with it personally, but here's a small snip from a large post DH posted roughly a year and a half ago...

A few things you have to recognize:

1. A lot of the ideas provided by members are great. However, what MOST never consider is that.... these types of modifications to the software are simply NOT possible from a programmer's perspective.

A lot of "hacks" are buggy to begin with (because the code for them aren't written by the original programmers).... and they cannot co-exist with other new functions or the whole software will be completely unusable and buggy.

It's not a matter of snapping your fingers... it's a matter of logistics. You can't just add 100 new functions to an existing software (again, written by programmers.. most of them sloppy to begin with).... without bogging down the software and causing problems in other areas (or bugs).

Some functions, given the way the code is already written.... simply can't be added.

I appreciate what DH is saying here and he's right, to an extent. But there are probably a good 20 hacks Om and I have personally installed here that work seamlessly. Those are all modifications written by coders that were not part of the original vbulletin software. I'm not sure that DH ever did any of the coding on the old ES site (could be wrong, but I think the vast majority of that work was done by Blade). We have seen, for some of the custom stuff and more complicated 'hacks' that an 'average' coder can make a mess of it. If you get a good one, I'm not sure there's much you could imagine that you couldn't make happen, if you're willing to spend the money to have it created.

I suspect what Dead Money is asking for isn't complicated. Whether it's something that would be appealing enough to the group to be worth pursuing, I don't know...

For years now, I have frequented hundreds of forum sites and forges special relationships with the members of said sites including several from here. I'm an avid angler and surfer so my fishing and surfing bookmarked sites are numerous... I'm responsible for all the systems on multi-million dollar vessels, smaller ones, jet skis, computers, navigation equipment, vehicles, offices, docks, well, you get the point. This all leads me to a slew of forum site memberships. Being a redskins fan leads to at least a dozen too...:insane::insane::insane:

These "relationships" we all have has a tendency to become a little anonomous and I tend to share a pic of myself in a lot of them just so that I can put faces with names. With the skins in particular there are just too many common usernames and everchanging signatures to keep track sometimes... :new_idea: Right Skinsfan23847r56384 ? :moon:

What the heck am I getting at? Face Shots :square: as avatars as an option is something that I think fits football fan sites well. I know I know... At one time you may remember me asking to change my username for the sake of anonymity... But once the embarrassing photos stopped being circulated it made me behave more in a manner where I would like to share who I am, where I am and more about me than that I bleed burgundy and gold.

This of course would come with a price :frown2: which would be custom avatars and they of course would have to be moderated. If you could put up with some delays I would volunteer. :help: See I'm a boat captain, so if I'm traveling, its hard to keep up. We do spend a lot of time dockside and we always have internet dockside.

I've really enjoyed facebook to keep up with the friends I've made all over the place. I know a lot of members here personally and I'm sure some of you know many more than I. Its fun, but always a struggle to put faces together at tailgates and travel games, etc... :grouphug:

Anyway its an idea and there would have to be Admin approval on avatars they would have to be stored on your servers so people couldn't just change the pic and re-save with the same name and to prevent dead links and would probably come with some sort of waiting period for users. It would require rules like must have your face in it or whatever you deemed necessary.

Anyway, I think you get it... kick it around and let me know if I can help. Love to see everybody get along like in the old days and putting your picture up makes you more accountable for what you say and how you say it. Just my 2 cents. Thanks again for all the hard work guys.:claps::claps::claps:

Hey Kevin,

First of all, thanks for taking the time to give some great suggestions

Did you know that all members already have the ability to post their own photo? When you click on a member's name and go to their profile page, there's all kinds of options there, including an option to add a 'profile picture', either from a photo located on another website, or uploaded directly from your pc. That photo will then show up on your profile for anyone who wants to view it. It will also show up when you click the 'Members' list. We made a conscious decision when we designed BGO to limit avatar use - because we wanted a certain look and feel to the site, and felt giving total freedom for folks to load their own avatars wasn't something that fit in with what we were envisioning. I think there are huge chunks of functionality that members here haven't even figure out are available because most other sites don't offer it. The profile page is just one of those. In fact, if you're a premium member, you have total ability to completely customize your profile page.

Great John thanks for the info! And the plug was just subtle enough where it might work! ;) Custom avatars are a major PIA and I hadn't thought about the "look" and "feel" both very important points I simply overlooked. I still cant believe I found the time to type that up... Ugh. Thanks again, great job as always!

Okay gentlemen - I've increased the default BGO Mobile font size from '10' to '12'. Looks much easier on the eyes from my end.

What say you Yusuf and friends?

Thanks again for increasing the font size. It's sooo much better. My eyes may last well into my 50's now. :D

Okay, on to my next unreasonable request. :) Is there any way you all could add a link that provides the user with the option to move over to the non-mobile optimized site? I was trying to get to the Pickem page and just realized it isn't there in the mobile version of the site. If adding the mobile/full site link isn't an option, adding all the forum links to the mobile site would work equally well.

Yeah, I know. I've always got plenty ideas for changes and none about how to get 'er dun. At least that's what our IT guy at work always tells me. :)

I actually think there *is* an option to bypass the mobile skin, but it may not be working correctly. I'll see what I can do.

And keep the suggestions coming - they are appreciated, and that's the only way we'll get better :)

Well, I'd like to be able to say I saw it and the link didn't work. Unfortunately, I didn't see it but I checked and the link didn't do anything...assuming you meant the link to "PC Mode" and the problem isn't with my iPhone/Safari.

I've noticed that when I quote someone on BGO Mobile, it is very hard to respond. It shows the previous quote in one-line of text, instead of wrapping around in the text-box, if that makes sense, and I can't see what I'm typing as the cursor goes to the end of the text (I assume). This is using the standard BB browser.

I'll give it a try and see if I can see what you're talking about...

Couple ideas:

Get rid of the 2009 schedule. Replace it with 2010 opponents.

Place a link underneath your BGO graphic at the top so that clicking on it will bring a member to the home page.

it seems like every time a skins story breaks we have 4 or 5 articles on here about it. i dont know which one to post in but i thought that if we posted in one of them it would take it to the sons...or am i mistaken there?

Mike, that does not happen automatically to date. One of the admins has to move the thread to get it from Newstand to SoW (which we do when we see one that has been posted to).

Making it automatic is something I believe is being looked at for the future.

is it just me or when you log in to the home page the "forums" button at the top doesnt work?

i end up clicking new posts and then the forums button.

Boone

When you say you 'log in' to the homepage, do you mean you are logging in and out each time you visit the site, or do you just mean when you enter the site auto-logged in? Either way, I think that's likely a browser thing on your end - there isn't any kind of a setting thing we can adjust as far as I know. We'll be glad to verify that though.

MikeSr619

auto logged in..the front page where it says "new posts" who's online, etc...

if i click the forums button up top it doesnt do a thing. but if i click on "new posts" it changes screens and then allows me to click that.

Switch servers! Even BGO Lite is crraaaawwwwllliiiiinnnng lately, not to mention all the repeated "database errors" and what not. :(

Boone

We don't have an independent server - we're on a shared server currently - with one of the biggest hosting sites in the US. There are always going to be occasional hiccups when you run a website.

Unless you guys all want to pay $19.95 a year to have site access, we'll have to live with occasional tech issues. We don't make money on the site and have spent far more to date out of pocket than we've generated. A dedicated high speed server is beyond our means unless we become a paid membership only site.

Honestly, you can count on 1 hand the # of times we've been down, and we really haven't had a chronic issue with slow load times, or other issues.

Would like for the original thread creator to have the ability to edit the title of said thread. This will allow for orderly updates and eliminate confusion about a thread that has gone through needed changes.

Boone

I agree that would be convenient. I've gone through our Admin Panel, and also researched it. Based on how we have permissions currently set - you should be able to edit your thread titles, but obviously it's not working for some reason. I'll see if I can find out why you aren't able to do that on threads you started.

I asked about this awhile ago, and Om (I believe) said he set it so you could change it for the first 24 hours only. Not exactly sure why that was (can't remember his response), but he had a reason for it.

Can we set up tapatalk? This is the only forum I don't have on tapatalk for my phone, so I don't get to read it :(

I believe you just sign up for an account, download the plugin, and install it to the board. It's free to have it show up in the app.

If you need help with any of it let me know. I'm a sys admin, so I'm always willing to help with this sort of thing.

Let me know if you think it's doable or not :)

Heck, it won't take a Nokia smartphone. Bah. Nokia is not supported by vBulletin anyway - it is a bear to make it work in here. Looks like Tapa is like other apps - for a few "sexy named" smartphones" only.

Yes, I could do that.

But i've already purchased tapatalk and all my other forums are in there, adding this to it would be real convenient for me. It'd also be nice for anyone else with tapatalk.

I only suggest it because it's a free plugin that takes just a few minutes (from my understanding) to enable. If it was anything more I wouldn't even bother, and if they decide not to mess with it I would certainly understand :)

I'm assuming you're using a windows phone 7 nokia, if so you can use this
http://www.board-express.com/

it's an app that works with the tapatalk plugin from the forum. costs the same as the tapatalk app, not sure why they haven't developed for wp7 yet... i've never used it, so i'd read the reviews before actually purchasing if you were considering it.

I use the Ovi Suite and not Win7 on the smartphone. I have the N900 - Nokia's top of the line. 32 GB of storage, 5 MP camera, HD video recording, GPS, etc., etc., etc. Better than all of the sexy names stuff, but it is not a sexy name - so it is not supported by vBulletin or tapa.

I'd still take this phone over the others - it is a better product and I can still do a lot with it. Thanks for the help though.

question; and you can tell me to piss off with it and its no big deal but when I log on from my phone (which is most of the time) and click new posts I will see the same story from SOW, Matt Terl, WP, ESPN, PFT, etc.

do we have a way of downsizing (or a want to) and getting just the main ones we all use? i dont know how that looks but it would help a lot.

I'm not sure I'm following you Mike - what do you mean 'click new posts I will see the same story'?? Are you saying that it's not updating for you?

I will see if I can get the tapatalk thing working for you tshiles. We are looking at vbulletin's mobile suite - it looks pretty high speed, but requires some pre-work using Mac publisher that we would have to outsource - and it's expensive. We've spent a lot of $$ on the site the past 2 years, between chat software, and a Facebook integration app that we're installing as we speak (you'll be able to see forum/thread content right on facebook). So we'd probably be looking at next year to even think about the mobile suite option.

nah, what I mean is when we signed Leigh Torrence I logged on to BGO thru my phone and saw at least 7 different threads about it. BGO, WaPo, SOW, Matt Terl, etc. It just feels like the same story over and over. If not, its all good obviously. I was just hoping for the sake of scrolling. Its more a "bitchy whiny" request than anything.

Oh - okay - gotcha...that's just because we have a number of RSS feeds that are pulling similar stories. I can dial those back or eliminate some when I get a chance, it'll just mean we won't get some of the less high profile stories that are only on a specific site.

I'm with Mike (assuming I'm understanding his suggestion correctly). I log in and see 235 new posts, and then 230 of them are random blogs. Then when you revisit the site in a couple hours, the same ones are still considered "new posts." I read some of them, so I appreciate the feature, but I do think it could be scaled back a bit. Maybe by a member vote?

One other thing...

I have been downloading and testing apps for my phone to see if it can improve my forum and internet surfing experience. Maybe this is something that others can test for their own phones. Just do a google search on that phone and search for apps that can enhance internet options. Most are free and easy to use.

It's not a matter of what we *want* to do on this, it's a matter of what we *can* do. Unlike the vast majority of functionality, the 'New Posts' section cannot be customized in any way. Unlike the front page 'Latest Discussions' section, we can't alter which new posts it pulls to 'New Posts'.

So we either give you access to the news feeds, or we get rid of them. The only other option I have is to terminate some of those feeds so there's less volume.

I'd also stress that if this is a big issue for you, you may want to use some other entry point to perusing the site other than using 'new posts' - such as going directly to our two major forums.
